Oil Cooler Mod

Has anyone rugged an electric fan to the oil cooler?

Seems like a good idea as the oil carries a third of the cooling. Any reason why this might not be a good idea?

thanks in advance,

Hakan

Might the auxilliary electric fan from the radiator work?

dr0x 01-10-03 07:37 PM

If you have that fan (not all models came w/ it). But I suppose it would work. But you would really need to look into upgrade the alt if you have both a e-fan and an oil cooler fan going. Thats atleast 30amps right there.

Hamza734 01-10-03 07:49 PM

I do have that fan, and it should be pretty easy (splicing wires, drilling holes to mount it on the cooler.

With regards to electric fans, an alternator upgrade probably won't be necesarry. very few of them will draw 50 amps. The 16" black magic fan only draws 13.9 volts...

The stock alt is pretty weak. My e-fan uses 20 amps. I would think I could find one that uses about 10-15 for the oil cooler. However, I will put money on the fact the head lights WILL dim when all that shit turns on. It doesnt take much to use the extra power with aftermarket stuff.

you have an S4 right?

Yes.

i saw a dual oil cooler on summit (one for engine oil, other for tranny fluid (AT tranny)) Its a one piece design, looks like a really big oil cooler, except theres 2 separate ones in one. I was thinking of getting this, mount it somewhere by the tranny. splice into the Turbo oil lines into one side of the oil cooler (for cooler oil for turbo), and the other side would be for fuel, for maximum fuel consumption, then hook up the stock fan onto it. it was only 90 i think and came with oil filter relocation and all kinds of other shit.

Don't waste your time and money. The stock cooler is much better then almost any aftermarket cooler out there.

As to the original poster, the stock fan shroud already provides ducting to the oil cooler, so extra fans are not necessary. If you go to an electric fan, you should provide a proper shroud.

Hamza734 01-11-03 12:51 PM

There's actually precious little ducting. Especially when stationary, there's almost no fresh air coming to the cooler...

i heard the cooler oil going to turbo should get u +psi, and cooler fuel is better (duh) thats why when u use N20 u need that shit at a proper temp to work properly

Do you actually have an oil temperature problem? Or even an oil temperature gauge? There's no point in spending money to fix a problem you don't have. As mentioned above, the oil cooling system is perfectly capable unless you're at very high power levels. There's plenty of airflow through the oil cooler when the car's moving, and the engine's cooling load at low speed is more than taken care of by water cooling.

Ok, as Aaron Cake mentioned, "the stock fan shroud already provides ducting to the oil cooler, so extra fans are not necessary". Saying you are running an electric fan, should you run another fan(s) on the oil cooler? Or should you try to find a way to use the stock shroud with the E fan?

It would be better to build a duct for your electric fan that covers the entire rad. That way, it also takes care of the oil cooler as well (as in the stock setup).
