Oil Change
Is there any tips I should know when I change the oil on my rx7? Also where is the drain plug located? I have a 2nd gen. Thanks.

plug
drain plug is on the bottom... :)
if you can get urself under the car just take a gander under the engine and you should see it. it should be somthing you can screw off. hope theres just the one pkug around there. if so it should be a cake walk. manual says change the oil while the engine is warm as well. manual also say BE CAREFUL NOT TO BURN YOURSELF :) |
Yep, exactly what he said. Make sure the car/engine is warm.
I used to have to raise the car up to get under it. As a little tid bit. Get a screw driver, and poke a hole into the top of the old oil filter 15 minutes before you pull it off. You'll get less oil all over everything when you unscrew it if you let the air in and the filter drains out first. |
well I usually need to drive up a 2X4 piece of wood in order to be able to jack up my car. from there use jack stands to be secure.
The drain plug is on the bottom drivers side (righty--tighty(clockwise) / lefty--loosey(CCW)) It is recommend that the engine oil is warm before draining it because it flows out easier (and takes out more of the particles/dirt). Make sure you use a good quailty oil filter (no Fram, etc.). Synthetic oil is not recomended on rotaries :) |
Thanks for your help guys. And I'll be sure not to burn myself...haha.

oil change
thanks for the screw driver tip icemark.

I also put an old rag under the filter base. That way most all of the oil that comes out of the filter gets on the rag instead of all over everything else.

Castrol GTX 20w50 is what I use and a lot of others here use it as well.

i use 5W30 or 10W30 all the time for all my cars i have had. Is this stuff bad for a rx-7 or something?
|
Good oil filters: Mobil, K&N (both expensive ~$10, but are very high quaility), also Puralotor PureOne and Mazda (~$5)
oil weight: follow the owners manual, it depends on the temperature, 20W50 is fine over 40 degrees fahernheit. oil brand: they are about the same..., but I wouldn't use a cheap brand. Castrol, Mobil, Valvoline are very good. I've heard bad things about Pennzzoil(yellow)~quaker state... |
