Odd differential question.
 

I know that my 88 turbo II came with a stock limited slip. I'm pretty sure it is a viscous type, correct me if I'm wrong. I was wondering, I know some of the 240 guys do it, but I read a writeup on one of their forums, and they were basically showing that somewhere in the differential you can but shims in and make it that same as a 1.5 way limited slip. Can this be done with our cars?

S4 uses a clutch type diff.

You have clutch type LSD in your car .....

You can re shim it to make it lock sooner or later.

Ok thanks. I thought it was viscous but I couldn't remember. Do the s5 have the viscous? I saw the write up and thought it was kind of interesting so I figured I would ask and see if anyone knew anything about it.

I'm kinda in the same boat but I have an N/A open clutch type diff. is it possible to shim this too? I only hear people welding the open diffs but making it lock sooner would be better since I daily the car as well as drift. don't mean to hijack, just a similar question.

For drifting .... it's more about weight transfer than powering out.
Get a good set of suspension and you'll be better off.

Open diffs don't have anything to shim. There's no clutch pack. Same goes for viscous LSDs; a viscous fluid within shear thickens to the point that it "locks".

^ As above. Be glad yours is a clutch type - once the fluid breaks down in a viscous, it's done, it can only be replaced - and the $1000+ Kaaz on Mazdatrix linked above would be a better choice than OEM viscous.

if you have a viscous or open diff, its best to get a S4 clutch diff, or aftermarket one. You can weld it if you can live with the consequences of it.

ya, I spaced out on what I was talking about that then. There ISN'T anything to shim in an open clutch type, slipped my mind. I want a kazz/tomie/os geiken 1.5 way but I ain't got the money yet. I need coilovers bad. I am drifting totally stock N/A right now and it sucks. coilovers and a welded diff is what I need but since I daily the car, I didn't really want to weld it until I get a spare. got a t2 to rebuild too so my list is as such: coilovers> t2 rebuild and swap> 1.5 way> rims> bodykit (unless I need kit to fit wheels then its at same time.).lol.

I was thinking the clutch type went bad pretty easily. I think I had it mixed u with the viscous. What is the difference between the two exactly and why is the clutch type so much better?
