Octane level???
 

Okay, so I keep getting different answers from people about whether to put 87 octane or 91 octane in my n/a 86 Rx-7...I'd just really appreciate it if someone can give me an answer to this so i don't have to worry about crap building up in my engine...thanks! :wallbash:

87 only for an N/a anything else it will run like poop rotaries are special... my t2 when stock ran best on 89 but i wont open that can of worms. 87 any higher wouldnt lead to too much crap in your engine it will just slow you down and possibly wound your gas mileage

87 is fine for you. 89 and up is usually used with the turbos with mods. A completly stock TII would be fine with 87 too.

The lady I bought it from said make sure you put premium in...and after reading on the internet that 87 was best I was a bit confused. It's nice to talk to some people who know what they're talking about! lol:icon_tup:

Well that's your problem there. She was probably told that by the dealership when she took it in for a $100 oil change. :rlaugh:

So is there anything I can do to restore the performance that's lost due to the higher octane gas? I just hope the engine isn't shot to hell because of this crap ya know?

87 octane is fine for a n/a , you dont get more power for higher octane. It will be just a waste of money.

The higher octane fuels didn't mess up your engine... So if you want to fix the problem... put 87 in. Simple as that.

Good to know...I was dreading that the motor would cease or something due to crap built up inside it.

One less thing for me to worry about...

Okay another question for you...What performance parts would give me the best bang for my buck? I just got my rx-7 about a week ago, and it's completely stock.

Spend as much as you can on tune-up items and replace everything that is broken or not working right..

If the car still has the owner's manual in the glove box, you can open it up and quite plainly read that the car was designed for a minimum of 87 octane.

If the engine is running poorly due to deposits, then a higher octane fuel may help it run better as a temporary band-aid, but it will still need to get rebuilt at some point.

Everybody wants to install flashy go-fast stuff, but the above is what is really required. You can replace the worn stock parts with performance items as required. Unlike some of the glorified econo-boxes pretending to be sports cars, this is a real sports car.

Recommendations for "tune-up" items:
1. Read the "stickies" at the top of the 2nd Gen forum.
2. Buy a service manual (Mazda and/or Haynes) or download the Mazda manual from the internet. This way you can follow the service intervals, and you are not completely lost when it comes to repairing the car.
3. Use only the Mazda brand thermostat, green (not orange) coolant, and distilled water.
4. Opinion: I recommend Castrol GTX (non-synthetic) oil for the engine, Mazda brand oil filters, any brand of synthetic oil for the transmission and differential, and top tier gasoline.

I love everything about cars and driving, unfortunaltey im not much of a mechaninc :-/

So I guess I need to find someone in my area that's all about mazdas that can show me a thing or two lol.
