o2 sensor problems
hi there, my 88gxl has about 137k on it and i believe that it has the original o2 sensor. so the last time i filled up, i calculated my MPG and got a hearty 12.5. someone told me that a new o2 sensor would help that and i wanted to get your opinions on it before i went out and got one. thanks for your help-Dan

yeah i'd like to know also. and what one is the best?

Bosch units have worked fine for me for years.

How hard were you driving? 12.5mpg would be about right for some high RPM fun, a bit low for city driving, and absolutely disgusting for highway driving (below what no O2 sensor should cause).
I just used a generic $20 replacement from Autozone or some such place. -=Russ=- |
O2 sensor comes into play in closed loop mode, i.e. cruising at a steady rate. You can replace it, but don't expect great improvement in mileage, chances are the problem lies elsewhere.
|
From personal experience, the difference in average fuel consumption between a brand new O2 sensor and a no sensor at all is ~5% .

If you do a lot of open highway driving, the O2 sensor might mak a difference. On my old '91 N/A, the exhaust actually turned my rear bumper black. Changed the O2 sensor (generic one I bought at Advance Auto for ~$20) and problem was solved. But as for mileage improvement, not that great. I was getting 23 before and improved to maybe 24.2 after.

well, of corse im hanging out in the high RPM's, it is a rotary engine. the mileage is based on a tank of only city driving. also, i was wondering what kind of mileage a turbo II got? just wondering.

Where is the O2 Censor located?
|
In the NA's exhuast manifold or the Turbo's downpipe.
