That means that you were not using the proper box (dimensions) for that woofer.

In my experience that is not a "too much power" problem

the box recommendation was 1.2 cubic feet and my box was a tad under that still the guy at pioneer told me that i was pumpin the sub way to hard..... although SPL wise it was up there with my friends 15 inch MTX thunder 8000 in his 3rd gen... :D oh well im going to get 2 of these bad boys and pump em just less wattage and more proper box sizing. oh well it was great for the 2 days it lasted !!! turned alot of heads with one 12!!!!!
