Noob question but I did search 1st
 

:confused: Helping a friend out with his 87 rx7 non turbo. We had been trying to get it to start and it sounded like it wanted to start but wouldnt. Replaced the spark plugs, cleaned air filter, replaced fuel filter, and made sure the plug wires were on right. Well I called a guy that from what we know of is teh rotary guru around this area and he said to try and pour some oul into the throttle body and see if it will start. Well it did start after a few spins but smoked like hell. It'll run like that until it "runs out of smoke" then it dies. Pour more oil into the tb and it starts right up. The oil pressure guage is showing no oil pressure while cranking over but while it is running it shows 30 psi on the gauge(stock in dash) It doesnt go much above that when revving the motor while running. I checked the wire to the sending unit with switch on and engine off by grounding the wire from the sensor on a ground and the gauge goes all the way up to 110psi. I'll be honest I dont know much about the rotary motors except what I know would fit in a thimble compared to most of the guys here on this forum. I've worked as an auto mechanic for quite a few years but have never messed with a rotary motor. Any ideas what the problem could be ? I'm lost with this motor since it's unlike any motor that I've worked on before. Oh and compression seems to be good but havnt compression cheked it just tried to start it without the plugs in it and it pumped out alot of air. Sorry for the really long post but we need help in a bad way.

Oh yeah, it'll take several 'moments' of cranking before oil pressure begins to read.

Search on how to set timing. This could very well be your problem...

Also, it NEVER hurts to check your compression.
