Noisy S4 N/A 5-speed transmission

My transmission is suddenly very noisy in first, third and fifth, just howls, but not in second or fourth. Happened all of a sudden. Suspected lack of oil, so draind the tranny, full of oil. Small amounts of steel dust on the magnet on the drain plug. Filled the tranny with new gear oil, noise still there.
As it affects some gears and not others, is it a certain shaft bearing?
Should I drive it carefully to my mec 3 hours away, or should I trailer the RX7
Advice please. 1985 GSL SE 5 speed tranny will fit, I have a spare one?

sounds like a shaft bearing...1st 3rd and 5th are on the same shaft.

You might strand yourself trying to make a 3 hour drive with a dying transmission. I'm not sure that's worth the risk.

I think to use a 1st gen transmission you just have to swap the tail housings. The opposite swap is probably in the 1st gen section's FAQ.

Sounds like my old n/a tyranny not long before it left me stranded

the center counter shaft bearing is a double row ball bearing on the 81-87.5 transmissions, and the after market rebuild kits.

the balls need a little retainer thing, and its plastic... so the balls fall out, and it'll let the shaft move around, 4th is straight thru, so there is no load on the countershaft, so no noise.

the 87.5+ factory part is a tapered roller bearing. aftermarket is the double row ball
