newbie, turbo II conversion?
 

Hi guys i'm new to the whole rx-7 community and i just have a quick question. I'm looking at buying a 2nd gen and it's very hard to find a turbo II, if i just buy a 2nd gen 5spd is a conversion hard? How different are the motors? I figure the brakes being different shouldnt be a bad deal since i would upgrade those, and getting turbo II bumper/hood etc shouldnt be hard.

Also is it hard to just modify a base model 7?

The base is probably the furthest away from what you'll want to start with, if you did go through with this. However, I'd greatly suggest waiting for a TurboII to pop up, as this is definatly not your weekend warrior project.

Thats gonna be a real sporty swap for a beginner.

Only took me two years when I was a n00b.

(Ignore the fact that I got sold a bum engine, and had to rebuild it, and the fact that he shipped it with all the wrong series manifolds/etc, and that I moved away from where the car was for a while...) :p:

sporty.....lol, it looks as hard as converting a fwd dsm to awd, my car will be selling soon and i'm using $1,000.00 of my tax return just to get started on a new car. I've loved the savannah since i was a kid, hopefully a turbo II will come by, if not i'll go with an n/a just to learn a bit.

I said "sporty". Not "impossible". You might be up late some nights tearing your hair out. But if your reasonably intelligent, it can be done.

i'm assuming just boosting a base model 7 is just a pipe dream?:(

Here's a big couple of rules to follow.

A) STAY WITHIN THE SAME SERIES AS THE CAR YOU BUY
B) Take your time, and do everything CORRECTLY, don't r hack up your wiring and rig things just to get it to work
C) Always ask or search if you have a question about something, or things just don't seem to fit like they should, chances are we can clear something up in about 5 minutes that might totally screw you if you try it on your own.
D) Buy lots of alcohol.
E) Don't expect it to go quickly, you'll almost always forget parts, and you're going to be waiting a lot on shipping, use this time to search/read and learn as much as you can before everything even arrives
F) Ignore J-Rat :)

As per your boosting a base. It can be done, however you'll want to swap it over to a 5lug, which just adds more work to your list. It's not all that difficult to do, just more work to add and more cost.

hehe, although id like another reason to drink i've quickly decided i'm just going to go after a T II, emailed someone who knows i was interested in a T II he sold; he says that he will be converting 2 non-turbos he just got to T II spec, wish me luck maybe i'll post back in a month saying i got a T II, maybe even a T II convertable if this guy is good for his word and not just wasting my time.

wait and buy a turbo II. it'll be cheaper, eaiser, better, and running...
