Newbie Needs Help!

Hey guys, im new to the rotary world and needed some advice on a project car that i was interested in. I found a 87 turboII that is supposedly in excellent shape. The car needs new rear tires, some shocks cause its "floaty", and it needs some rear differential mounts cause he said it makes a cracking sound blah blah. He wanted 2500 and i talked him down all the way to $1000.....do u guys think this is a go?? or no? The interior/exterior are in good shape and the car doesnt smoke or anyhting he says.....the guy is kinda desperate to sell it cause supposedly he needs some $$ for a down on a new car......what are your guys' opinions.....what should i look for on these cars, are they EXTREMLY problematic?? PLEASE any input would be greatly appreciated..

BTW its an 87 with a 140k on it.

1000 is a really good price
i donno 140K is kina high miliage
and you said it was a project car assuming you are going to put plenty of mods
plan to save some money on a rebulid bound to happen in the next couple of years.

well, im loking to put around 2k into the motor....exactly how far can that get me??

Make sure that the motor is strong before you invest the 2 G's. Get a compression test to see if the rotors are in good shape. The car seems to be a good price regardless, but if you spend 2 G's on a motor that is no good, you'll need another 2 G's to build another one!

Oh should also mention, that these cars have a lot of minor things that act up on them, so your best money spent is to make sure everything is in perfect working order before you decide to touch the motor! Then start with intake and exhaust. those two mods alone will give you some impressive results! ;)

how hard is it to change the differential mounts??

HKSTurboII 05-10-03 12:04 AM

That depends on how handy you are with cars and tools! :D

i mean does it involve a lot of work, or is like changing a motor mount or somehting....would the ehxaust have to be removed to ger to it??

It will require you drop the rear end down, there are two larger bolts on the back side of the mount, and there are a couple more bolts to take off, i.e. shocks and rear suspension, then it just drops down, you take the old diff mount off, just two 12mm bolts and then replace with new mount, or just do as most do and weld that bitch solid. Then replace just as you took off! Its not that hard, just will take about 3-4hours your first time. then you get faster, i can do it in an hour or so.

And Rx-7 mods are enless, and you can go as fast as you want, it just depends on how much money you have to throw at that thing, I started on an 87TII just as you should and i have helped/worked on many, just do your research, use the search key (keeps the flaming down) and you will have fun with it i swear.
