new rx7 owner

alright heres the deal... i just bought a 88 gxl... its in awesome shape and the owned took very good care of it, i paid well for it and it only has 65k miles on it.... its clean as all hell... but alas with everything good theres something bad.... it idles great at 750... and it cold starts and warm starts great... but when u give it gas hard it makes a noise.... not a good sounding one either kind of a knocking type noise and i checked under the hood and it kinda sounds like its comeing from the injector area... so i was wondering if anyone had any ideas about what it maybe... and possibly a solution.... and also what else should i do to make sure it lasts... any maintance i should do first thing...? the car has sitting for a while so any help would be great...

Nice car congrats! Are you sure the noise comes from the engine bay? Also where in Michigan do you live?

DAN CARWIN 11-12-03 05:13 PM

make sure it is not your exaust rattling or shaking. at 65k miles their should be no knocking or any noise from engine area. looks very nice I will admit. their shouldn't be any thing around the injector area to knock. the only thing I can think of is a loose bolt rattleing around. for tune up change coolant, oil, fuel filter, spark plugs, air filter, sub zero fluid, tranny drain and fill, plug wires but really not neccessary. have fun with it. AND ALWAYS CHECK ON OIL LEVEL EVERY 500 MLIES OR SO>!!!!!!! easy way to kill your motor is low on oil.

na none of those noises... yet... like i said normal acceleration and idleing no noise.. sounds very pleasent... but slam the gas and its a clink clink.. like metal on metal.. i thought maybe something was rattleing on the extorior of the engine.. but couldnt locate it... ill figure it out this weekend

I have the same pinging noise but its because im missing a U clip that hold the exhaust up.This could be your problem.Do you hear it when you let go of the gas also or just driving with the foot on the gas?

Tovock 11-13-03 11:41 AM

ill check that tonight... im currently at work though so i cant do it now... but i think it might a lil bit... this weekend ill figure it out one way or another.. just i work til its dark and my garage isnt done yet.. so to look for problems by flash light is a problem.. also for an 88 gxl with 65.5k miles on it with a quarter size dent on a front quarter panel and great paint/no rust. was the 1500 buy worth it? i shoulda had it for less but some a-hole was bidding me up... regardless im happy with it but i wanna know if to the forum it seemed like a good deal
