New to Rotaries, but cant pass up this deal on an FC...

Hello Everyone!, Let me first introduce myself as this is my first post here:) My name is Nik T. and I have been a pretty hardcore all motor Honda guy for the past 4-5 years(13's, D.D., streets), but I think Im going to try out the rotaries for something new!

A friend of mine is moving back to P.R. and has to sell his 89 FC(N/A)...Im picking it up for a few hundred dollars but theres a catch...It doesnt run...The guy said he was driving on the interstate and he stopped at a toll. When he took off, he said it died.
Worst case scenario,I think maybe the apex seals are shot. If thats the case,I found a company that imports JDM engines/clips and found a TURBO swap for around $1400 I think...I am a technician,so labor shouldnt be much of a problem I think...

Or should I rebuild the current engine? How are rotaries 13B in particular to rebuild? Any certain special tools? seal compressor, installer?
I also heard that rotaries generally read low compression numbers when doing a comp. test. I will do a compression test when I buy it this Sun. Can you guys tell me what #'s I should look for?

And if theres any good books on this subject, feel free to recommend me some. Ive read some stuff on the net, but I need REAL people with REAL experience...

Thanks in advance!

welcome to the board, i think you'll love rotaries. That problem on the 89 fc could be just about anything, and you know that as a technician. Do your homework before anymods, and you sound like a drag racer so you can port this motor and run a 150 hp shot of nitrous, that'll probably get you to the 13's. Good luck.

well if you need help on the rebuild there are plenty of videos out there from atkins and a few other companies that help with rebuilds. as for clips from japan. well its a crap shoot if you go that route. i have to say there is a good chance that the engine is messed up some how. if you looking for a turbo car then you might want to pay the 1400 bucks , get a clip and do the swap. that way the only thing your really missing is the lsd rear end. unless he has a gtu i think which came with one. Compresstion test on rotaries are kinda like ones from standard piston engines. and the compression is pretty much the same. for more details check out www.rotaryresurrection.com in the tech section there is alot of good information about this test and others if you need them . Also in the top of this forum is a F.A.q which covers what to look for when buying a FC. and other test to make sure it wast over heated and what not . good luck

Sounds good...I think if I must I will just rebuild the current engine. Im kinda excited about building a whole different breed of engine!
Looks like I have alot of reading to do!

If I end up keeping it as a second toy eh, I mean....car, I wont be dragging it. I have the civic for that. I had drifting or some type of roadcourse racing in mind. I rode with a friend who drifted his 240 and it was a blast.

Anyways,cool- Thanks for the reference,Ill be doing some research now...
