New NGK part numbers...just a heads up

Since, these are popular plugs amongst us rotor heads, I thought I'd bring it to your attention if it already hasnt been said.

I went to buy new NGK plugs at Advance Auto and also tried Auto Zone. Neither of the stores had listed numbers for the BUR7EQ and BUR9EQ plugs like they had in the past. Both stores said they were discontinued. I ended up finding them at O'Reilly's. They had the new part numbers listed along with the old part numbers,

the numbers they had listed were as follows:

Leading: 3559 (BUR7EQ) to be replaced by 6917

Trailing: 5483 (BUR9EQ) to be replaced by 5777

Hopefully this helps people find the plugs they are looking for. And maybe AutoZone and Advance will get their shit together.

I wish I had an excuse to go buy some new plugs... my junk isn't even running :)

wonder how that happened

WHY IS EVERYONE IN THIS THREAD FROM GEORGIA??

originally, i just go in there, and tell them i need such and such spark plugs for my car. they ask the preliminary questions, and we go from there.

therotaryrocket 01-28-10 11:16 PM

^ you've never gotten wrong parts by doing so? I used to work at autozone and advance, and your a lot better off with part numbers, or at least specific information about your application. Some people go in there and the only thing they know about their car is what color it is. haha

anyways to the OP, thanks for the heads up, when I fix my running extremely rich problem I'm gonna pick some up.

any reason behind this? or just giving it a new stocking number? i know they changed the plating/coating a few years back but that didn't affect stock number.

no dude, i tell them its a 1991 mazda rx7 turbo... i tell em u need two ngk number 9's and two number 7's, and i get them correct 100% of the time.. unless they messed up the database on their side somehow, then i dont know. i have never used part numbers to buy things.

The four digit numbers are a stock number for a box of four plugs. It's used for inventory control purposes and easy bulk ordering.
The NGK part numbers remain the same.

FirebirdSlayer666 01-29-10 11:31 AM

Mt store has the new numbers and still works with the NGK number

vkjrocker 01-29-10 11:53 AM

I got mine from tops auto uhh i'll get the details on part numbers.
question: why do the rotary spark plugs have flat heads? instead of the little bar on top?

I noticed the same thing at Autozone a week ago. I told them which plugs I needed and they couldn't find them. Then they searched by car. I looked at 93 RX-7 and they had the new numbers. They were listed in the system as leading and trailing. I told them I needed the trailing. When they arrived they had BUR9EQP on the boxes and plugs. I have no idea how they found them as nowhere did I see the new numbers.

pele's has it right, its just the stock # that has changed. i work at napa and just interchanged the full ngk part # [bur7eq]. it comes up with 2 part numbers 3559 and 6917. if i try to order the 3559 stock # it wont let me, i have to order the superseded # which is the new stock # 6917. exact same plug just new stock #. happens all the time.

Right. They couldnt be looked up using the part number at Auto Zone or Advance Auto. Even by make/model/year. I havent tried by the new stock number at Auto Zone or Advance. Cause O"reilly had them.

just get it from mazda directly, it's one part number now I think...but you get a set of plugs that you need

rx-711 02-20-10 02:57 PM

this is why ive had so much trouble getting a new set

Go48 02-20-10 03:42 PM

I work at PEPBOYS and they still have the old part# well at least for now.

lonewolfrx 02-21-10 06:18 AM

i went to pep boys by my place and they dont seem to carry any of them in stock. none of the pep boys around me carry plugs for the 7 or 8.

The only dealer that has them is texas they have 33. I have a buddy at the local Mazda dealership. They will be no longer available at the dealership. The new ones you got with the new number. DO they look the same?

Jet-Lee 04-17-10 12:45 AM

I had to go to Kragen (O'Reilly's) to get the 7's. NO ONE else carried NGK at all, they had to order them. Even then, Kragen only carried the standard sets, no platinums or iridiums or even standard for the RX8.

WTF?

Vdub2002 04-17-10 09:30 AM

i work at autozone, the leading plugs are 10.99 each, and we have to VDP (vendor direct) the trailing plugs.
i go to oriellys myself for plugs, no shame here they are cheaper!

the bar would be ripped off by the apex seals
