new to the fc world

just got into the fc world. purchased an 87 gxl. unfortunately this car was exposed to a small fire melting a bit of wiring harness....the sensor in the thermostat housing, and the sensor behind the alternator to the left which i am assuming is an egi. not sure. the motor seems to turn over fine, no odd sounds or anything. but should i look into replacing motor and all or just harness and sensors? it also has an auto tranny, this must be rid of. how hard is it to swap in a manual?

There's a big write-up on the auto-to-manual-swap - Use the Search function to find it. Re the fire, you need to find the cause of it, or it may happen again. Are you sure it was a fire, or is it just melted wiring? Judging by the location of what you described, it sounds similar to something that happened to me. The filler cap for the cooling system (near the alternator, not the one on the radiator) overflowed and the coolant ran down the wires and into the connectors behind the alternator and shorted out and melted several wires leading down to the ACV.
