What is the proper break in period for a new engine?

For the first 500 miles keep it under 4500 rpm and for the next 500 miles baby it but u can wind it up a bit higher, i'd wait to redline it frequently till you've atleast got 1000 or more on the motor. Also, it's a good idea to change the oil after 500 miles. I did this with my motor in my 90 vert and she runs beautifully now.

Ok i have had 2 people tell me this now, however Chris at Banzai Racing told me to keep it under 4500 rpm's for the first 2500 miles, i just thought that was a little extreme

no usually break in time is around a total of 2000 miles but it varies if you dont know much abour rotary's they don't run that good when you first run them after a rebuild i say yes keep it under 4500 rpm for the first 500-1000 then you can run it alittle higher but not to much higher change your oil every 300-500 miles and you should have a very healthy rotary engine

The break-in schedule you received with the car is very similar to what others here are recommending. I don't believe that the difference between 2000 miles and 2500 miles is that "extreme".

Banzai Racing's break-in recommendations for all engine rebuilds ensure that you get the most life out of your rebuilt engine, and is mandatory for warranty coverage. It is totally up to you the customer whether you wish to follow our break-in schedule or not.

We suggest keeping the RPMs below 4500 for the first 2500 miles, with oil changes (NON-synthetic oil only) at 500, 1000, 2500 miles and every 2500-3000 miles thereafter.
We also suggest no boost for the first 1000 miles. Then introducing boost within reason (3-4 psi).

I repeat, it is totally up to you how you wish to break-in your engine.
