New Car

Hey how are you all doing? i am deciding on whether to buy a rx7 or not.... hopefully you can all help me out, i can get a NA 86' rx7 for about $750... it doesnt run and needs a new engine, i was wondering if it is worth getting? and also... if i do get it how hard is it to get a S5 twin turbo engine and get it in the 86 NA, its my plan but i need help im not really familiar with rx7s but i want to really get in to it

1987RX7guy 06-29-03 06:26 PM

It is not worth it. The S5 doesn't have twin turbos either.

Project84 06-29-03 06:35 PM

yeah, its easy to confuse the TII with a twin turbo. The TII is the second turbo that they produced for the RX-7. The first turbo was on the 1st gen RX-7s (78-85 models) but none of them were shipped to the states.

HawkINX4 06-29-03 06:47 PM

so what could i swap into the 86 NA?

Project84 06-29-03 06:50 PM

you can put any motor in it you want. Any 86-88 N/A will fit with no custom fabrication. Other year engines may need the ECU and wire harness from what ever year car you got the engine from. I.E., 89 turbo will need 89 turbo ecu and engine wire harness. Or you could spend 750-1000 dollars on a stand alone engine management system.

Some people put chevy 350s in RX-7s although that isn't too popular around this forum.

HawkINX4 06-29-03 06:58 PM

well i have heard of sr20dets in rx-7s but i dont know also.. that means i can put 86-89 twin turbo engine in the rx-7 and all ill need is the harness and the ecu right? sorry bout that i think the year of the rx7 is a 87 not 86 but that makes no difference all i really want is to put a 13bt in a NA rx7 sorry if i mistakenly put something different because of my lack of knowledge. i thought the s5 was a 13bt

1987RX7guy 06-29-03 07:04 PM

again the TII engine has only a SINGLE turbo not TWINS!

HawkINX4 06-29-03 07:05 PM

then which ones are twin turbo?

SleeperZzZ 06-29-03 07:05 PM

a s5 turbo is a 13bt , which is a single turbo engine, i would just put a new 86 n/a engine in it, and be happy you are driving a rx7

SleeperZzZ 06-29-03 07:07 PM

a 13b-rew is twin turbo, very hard to put into a sencond gen, also a 20b is twin turbo, no offence, but if you dont know this, i would stick to a stock engine

HawkINX4 06-29-03 07:12 PM

well yeah... i would do that except if i had the chance to put in a new motor in i would just put a more powerful motor in there

Project84 06-29-03 07:12 PM

The 87-92 turbos are single turbos. the 3rd generation RX-7 has the twin turbos, but its a lot of money to get one of those engines, and a lot of money to make it fit in a 2nd gen RX-7 body.

If you want a 87-92 turbo (no turbo model was available in 86) then you will need to check out the archives. At the top of the main page, you will see where it says 2nd gen archive. Click there and there should be a writeup named N/A to TII Swap or something similar. People have done what you want to do and wrote down how to do it. All necessary parts are listed. Prices will vary depending on whether you have a complete TII motor to put in a car, or if you have to build the motor first.

HawkINX4 06-29-03 07:14 PM

ok cool your the man... now i understand lol sorry it took long enough thanks for your guys' patience though, you guys are quick to respond... lol my other forum takes a day to get a respond

chris-reedtn 06-29-03 07:22 PM

you honestly would be better off buying a turboII for a little more cash then doing the swap. I.e. it would be cheaper. Chekc out the for sale section of the forum, and also thepartstrader.com for turbo cars for sale. I got my 87TII for 2k and my brother got his 87TII for 1k another friend of mine, got his for 1k also, so there is plenty out there.

yeah, if you don't already have a car, it would be better to buy one with a turbo. Check www.thepartstrader.com and go to the mazda rotary section. Also look in the cars for sale section in this forum.

You need to read the stickies and FAQ on the top of the page or people are going to flame on you for asking questions that can easily be answered by reading those or searching. Most basic info is covered in the stickies.

HawkINX4 06-29-03 08:17 PM

i did check buddy, and i saw horsepower ratings but i did not find ets for stock NA and its a simple question, you couldve just said the time instead of writing a paragraph on how i should look for it

good luck getting any more advice or info... im not being a jerk by the way

Project84 06-29-03 09:32 PM

How fast depends on the setup and mods done. About the only thing that everyone will agree on as far as "how fast is a N/A" is the 1/4mi numbers of a stock car. Change anything, anything at all, and people will argue HP, torque, weight reduction, and anything else you can think of. For drifting, most people say that the suspension tuning is more important. Go to the race car tech section of this forum and look for info on a good set up for drifting. Thats where people who do it hang out and they will talk to you all night about drifting, drag racing, autorcross, rally racing, and anything else people do in their 7s. A lot of info can be found by using the https://www.rx7club.com/forum/images/find.gif function.

HawkINX4 PM me some time, I live in Lancaster, Ca. as well. I am in the middle of doing an N/A to T2 swap on my 86 RX-7 right now. I am no rotary guru by any means, but if you need a helping hand sometime or something, I could try to help you out at least.

HawkINX4 06-30-03 01:52 PM

hey are you the guy with the dual exhaust? that goes to lancaster high?

White_Seven 06-30-03 03:29 PM
