Need your opinion on a car I'm buying
 

1988 RX-7 SE, 90k original miles. Interior is 8/10, engine is 7/10. NO rust, only a couple small dings. Runs great. Needs clutch and oil pan gasket. Selling for $3200. Good buy? Anyone know what a clutch runs for these? I can install it myself at school.

Edit: I've got a hold on it at the moment. May pick it up this week.

Well I would shop around, except I live in Colorado where there are next to no RX-7s for sale, and I have very little time to drive 500+ miles away for one. I thought $3200 was fair seeing as that is the high retail value for the car.

Edit: I drove 500 miles round trip today just to look at this car. If I purchase it, I'm having it trucked to the dealership where I work.

That's a lot of money!! Look around for a better deal, hit up craigslist if you have to.

All I know is that this car will become one major local drifter, and any of the stock parts I take out will be thrown on Ebay. So keep an eye out for some really good parts.

KBB and Nada guides are based on the prices that people have bought or put as bought on tax forms. No NA RX-7 in a competitive market will sell for $4300. I got a steal for mine at $2000 with a few paint scratches and recently remanned engine with a worn out clutch while a friend of mine paid $3000 for much less of a deal.

It is your decision what car to buy and if you like it enough to pay that much, we cannot rate your demand on supply and demand charts. Evidently our demand or what we see as demand (heck yes I would sell you my car for anything above $3000!) The fact that you didn't like our answers doesn't reflect that we don't know the market.

Keep in mind that the clutch job will either cost you about $600 in parts and time or for somebody else to do it while at the same time the 88' is an s4 generating 16<hp than the s5 with interrior parts that break more easily. Now, an 88 is a 10th ae which does add a significant amount of value to it - that might be what your pricing idea is about.

Remember, value is in the eye of the beholder. Good luck learning how to drift - an ae86 is generally considered easier to learn on - please don't kill your car - try some real course racing too.

look more around colorado. i live in pueblo, and i know there are some out there. dont pay that much for one. you could buy one ALOT cheaper. one with a brand new engine hardly goes for over 2g. watch ebay, and one will pop up in colorado within a month. get one cheaper and dump the extra money into it or save it. i know of a red NA for sale down here in pueblo, only seen it from the road but it looks to be in good condition. i know of another red NA for sale in Fowler, CO. havent seen it, but friends told me about it.

I bought my 88GTU(one of them) for 800$. And it was ported, perfect body, new wheels tire, and a ton of parts came with it.

That's right, it is my decision. I've also received PM's from an unnamed person on this board that is telling me to go for it. He thinks it's a great car.

The clutch job will not cost me that much. I am curretly attending automotive classes, and our current class is on transmissions. The teacher welcomes any cars that need tranny stuff done to help teach the class. Hell, $200 tops worth of parts and a free install.

I will look forward to learning how to drift this car. I won't kill it seeing as I've had an RX-7 before and know what parts to take it easy on. As far as the course racing goes, we have a local go kart track that is open to full sized cars as well. We have a drifting competition on the 14th of May (check mountain region forums for more info) and I look forward to getting tips from the almost 30 drivers that will be there.

I like to account for my own and otheres time even when i change my own stuff - I guess since you have this class that you already have as an expense of time (and maybe cash) you won't have to double account for it. I think I paid $90 or so for all reman parts (I honestly don't feel like i need a super amazing clutch) but then spent several hours cleaning/painting/retapping.

I wish you luck in your transactions, you sound very enthused.
