Need a Shop Crane (cherry picker), will this do for the 2nd Gen ?

thinking of getting this. Anybody had this before? I went to the store and saw it it looks ok. but reading the reviews they said its not long enough to pull an engine out unless its really small car like Miata.

if no then what do you guys use (for home garage)

I will probably take the engine out next or the week after so thinking of which cherry picker to get.

Yes. It is the one I use. You may want to pull the bumper skin off otherwise it does tend to rub up against it. It is a very close fit, but you can do it with the bumper skin on too. Also I divorce the trans when I pull motors from the 2nd. gen RX-7.

I used myself and two friends; it just takes a little bit of work to dodge your front bumper.

the engine comes out just fine regardless what you use. make sure the radiator is out as well and the tranny its still attached.

The Radiator will be removed. cuz its some no name copper junk probably from Autozone/AAP kind of store, the paint chipped and starting to rust. will replace that and use Koyo.

Have a floor jack under the tranny as well.

I suggest upgrading to the 2 ton unit for the longer lift arm... It'll save your front bumper from damage and you can use it on vehicles with larger engines.

you dont have to take the tranny out, just unbolt everything that is what I did.

I have the one ton lift. I just came in from the side to remove the engine. From the front it didn't look like I was going to get it out without messing up the bumper. Also I just unbolted from the trans too. I have heard it's easier to leave the trans on though.

I got the 1-ton crane and it works well enough. The boom is a bit short to approach the engine properly from the front though. As EnjoPugs mentioned, you'll have to go from the side so be sure to remove one of the front wheels first.

If I was going to do it again, I'd get the 2-ton crane instead. Makes life much easier when dropping in a 20b. One other thing I'd like to mention is that it's much easier to put in a 20b without the transmission. Any 13B can be done with the transmission on and not be too difficult. The extra length of the 20b makes it hard to clear the oil pan on the radiator support.

But on the plus side, the 1-ton version is about perfect for any compact FF car. Just last night, my friend and I pulled the engine & transmission from his Del Sol (bah, I know lol) using the 1/2 ton length without too much effort.

I think mine is a 1ton and I was able to pull the motor through the front (without trans and I'm pretty sure with the rad still in place, too). I had to give it a good push into the bumper, but it worked. I'd recommend pulling the rad anyway though, one less thing to go wrong. I was in a hurry but I'm usually pretty careful so I risked it. Removing the radiator would give you more room to jockey the motor around going in.

it seems that it might make more sense to get the 2 ton version. cuz this will not be the only car, prepare for the future.

to be honest I dont give a shit about the front bumper's paint cuz its already cracked when I got the car, no idea how and why, from the previous engine swap maybe ?? when the engine is out, I might get a flat bed and tow it to the body shop for repaint job.

I need to look at the crane again, last time I checked I was not sure if it would fit into my garage (I have a really small garage) if its too big then I might have to suck it up an just get the 1 ton version.

The tranny, I will take it out anyway, cuz after so many "unknown" miles (212K?) it might be a good idea to take it apart and see if anything needs to be replace/fix.

The foldable ones work VERY well for limited space. Takes about 30 seconds to unfold and get ready for use... Another 30 seconds to fold it up and put it away.
