need info on cracked exaust manifold and a/c problem 88 TII new to this forum
 

hi guys, be easy on me if any of this sounds stupid....

i have a 88 TII w. 85K miles and it has the following two things wrong:

a/c won't work ... mechanic says it needs a new condenser, receiver dryer and connecting pipe...he says he can no longer get factory parts.... and doesn't think its worth fixing.. i NEED A/C.. can anyone recommend a good parts source and does anyone have any idea how difficult it is to do (ie - how much repair parts and labor $)

you should be able to find the parts you need in the classifieds section...that's why it's there.

i would say at least 80% of all FC turbo manifolds have cracks in them...not really a big deal.

as long as your turbo isn't smoking badly and doesn't have bad shaft play, i wouldn't worry about it.

its not smoking bad, just sounds LOUD.. but my mechanic says i cannot continue to drive it with this problem and close my windows, or i will suffocate .. really he said that.. carbon poisoning ???

You can probably get the condenser and receiver/dryer from ackits.com, or you can probably get universal aftermarket parts if you don't want to go with exact factory replacements. If you go with ackits.com, be sure to call and talk to them to confirm the parts are right...I've seen some wrong parts pictured on their site for the 3rd gen.

As for the "connecting pipe" if it is an all metal line, you may be able to have it welded. If it is a rubber hose then you can more than likely just have the rubber section replaced with barrier hose. A shop specializing in auto A/C can probably handle either type of repair.

I suggest that you keep R-12 in the system and NOT convert to R-134a. Cooling performance is marginal with R-12 and will be downright terrible with R-134a.

Your best bet is to have the A/C repairs done at a shop that specializes in A/C repair.

You CAN get carbon monoxide poisoning from the leak in the manifold, but you would more than likely be able to smell that distinct smell of rotary engine exhaust way before you were poisoned to death.
