Need Help With Wheels...
 

Hey, Im new to this board, not new to the rotary though :)

One thing I am new at.... purchasing wheels... i have never tackled this before, and its fairly daunting.

my car: 1989 gtu

what i want: 17" wheels (or something to fill up the wheel wells more)

9" rear 8" front

also, im worried about my speedo being put off by larger wheels... can this be calibrated?

what wheels is everyone else running? im looking for something deep dish... preferably black w/polished lip.... but mostly the deep dish (especially in the rear) is what im looking for

any help would be great, thanks...

p.s. i read the fc wheel/tire faq and just got plain confused... i cant find a lot of wheels in 9" and 8" sizes like the faq talks about

just get the right size tire that will give you the same diameter as the stock wheel. Easy solution.

If you get wider wheels/tires, like 8", you'll more than likely have to use spacers which are kind of expensive. Also, if you want the big lip, you'll need wider wheels, which again means spacers.

If you want to fill up the wheel wells more, you can't do it just by getting slightly bigger wheels. I'm not sure why the wells on our cars are so monstrous, but to achieve the effect which I think you're looking for, you'll need to get lowering springs (which I think would actually be a classier mod to start with). The largest drop I found for a performance oriented spring was 1.5" and I found those @ fc3s.org in the 2nd gen specific retail section. They're B&G performance springs which were relatively cheap @ $200.00 shipped.

I'm running 18"x7.5" wheels on my car. They are huge wheels, but even then they still don't fill out the wells completely. The pic in my sig is with stock suspension.

1) FIND WHEELS YOU LIKE - most of the wheels out there come in very limited sizes and offsets.
Once you find a wheel you like, tell us the wheel sizes and offsets, and then we can give you a recommendation.

2) 8" wide wheel up front, go with a +30 to +28 offset.
I'd recommend a 225/45/17 tire for a 17x8 wheel.

3) 9" wide wheel in back, go with around a +25 to +30 offset.
I'd recommend a 255/40/17 tire for a 17x9 wheel.

With those wheels and tires sizes, there is no need to worry about speedo error.

what im looking at is the 5zigen '5zr copse' wheels....

maybe you can tell me my options with these? or if you know of any (quality) wheels that look like those that i can use? any input at all would be great!!!

btw i dont even know my current (stock) wheel size, as my car is out getting rebuilt/ported and i only drove it for about 2 weeks before i sent it away!

its an 89 gtu, so its a base model for that year
