need help with 86' running problems
1986 rx-7 non-turbo, automatic
just purchased last week ran fine and smooth, now idles irratic and has a rough idle. sometimes it won't start, it will flood. or just start then die when i put it into gear. or when i get it on the road and press the gas there is like a 2-3second delay, and it feels like i have a loss of power. i changed the fuel filter hoping it would be that easy. nope i had an 85 bmw that had the problem and it was the air flow meter would that be the case? where would i find one? intake filter is clean, just changed oil, fuel filter im new with the rotary engines, i understand how they work, just have never personally owned one. any input would be very much appritiated!!! |
start by adjusting the TPS. search the faq's to see how. clean the afm with some carb cleaner, start with that and see what happens. also check for vaccuum leaks by spraying carb cleaner around and see if the idle goes up, if it does u got a leak.

well im just getting time to work on the car again, well here is the latest news
car just kept flooding wouldn't start, so i was going to check the fuel pump, so i disconnected it and tried to start it. well it ran fine at about 1k for about 5 seconds...died(of course), i plugged the pump back in, wouldn't start. i disconnected it again, and it ran fine again for 5 seconds....died. do you think its my FPR? any other tips would be VERY helpful! oh and right above my exhaust manifold, there looks like 2 things that look like egr valves (don't know what there called) and i found a small broken vacum line, and i can't find the mate! i have no idea, i cant find any diagram to show where it was! thanks again |
i just took some pics of where the vacum line is broken, but i can't post them online anywhere :wallbash: . unless someone knows what it is

i unplugged the fuel pump, it ran for a few seconds and i ran to the back and plugged the fuel pump back in. it stayed running at about 1k for 10min, it ran smooth (just smoked a little) and if i gave it a hair of gas it would go up nice and slow, then a little more pressure on the gas and it would delay, then sputter up like it was getting flooded again. then i turned it off after about 10min and tried to start it again with the fuel pump connected....same, it would almost start then just flood itself again.
i tried it again after the car was warmed up, now with it unplugged it will only run for about 2seconds and if i can get the pump plugged back in it runs for about 5seconds longer then dies. ??????? all i can think of is the fuel pressure regulator...anybody know whats up? its my first rotary, help! |
go to photobucket.com and sign up for their free accoutn to host your pictures, as for the vaccume diagram there is one in the FAQ under the manuals and links section but i checked and it was down, i have a turbo vaacum diagram lying around somewere ill scan it so you can see.
EDIT: my scanner doesnt want to work, ill see if i can upload it when i get off work. it is a turbo one not N/A though so i odnt know if it will be close enough or not |

heres the vaacum hose diagram i had lying aorund, its for a turbo so dont know how much help it will be

You know what...mine had a similar problem one time. It turned out to be that one of the injector clips (under the intake manifold) came "loose." I snapped it back in and back to normal! Hope this helps.

ok well i just got home from the weekend and ready to work on it some more
i just checked the coils, they are fine i do NOT have a fuel pressure guage, so is there anyother way to check my fuel pressure regulator? or will i have to find a guage? and i read a topic that someone said check my: -coolant temp sensor -manifold air temp sensor -air intake temp sensor would those apply to my car? if so, location and specs please? oh and i dont know if this helps but the problem-lose of power, bad idle happened WHILE I WAS DRIVING. it drove in the morning great, filled up on gas, about 45 min later, ran kinda rough, and gradually got worse. until how it is right now any tips would be a HUGE help me and the rx-7:dunno: |
well i replaced my fuel pressure regulator, no difference!
so i changed the -fuel filter -fpr any other ideas??? i really don't want to have to remove the throttle body to check the primary injectors, im more concerned with forgetting where some of the vacum lines went. but i have to it's whats got to be done |
well fellas, i took of the throttle body, dynamic chamber etc.... and i took off the primary fuel rail and injectors and im gonna have them cleaned
but here is what i found: on the primary rail, the pulsation dampner is broken i believe. if i shake it i hear a rattling noise inside of it...i know thats not how it should be. so do you think that would be the problem? thanks |
Take the plastic cover off and you'll find a screw with an oring in there. They vibrate out, put a dab of loctite on it and put it back in. As for the vaccuum line, it looks like the on that goes to the pipe that goes to the exhaust. It runs the 5th and 6th port actuators. However it has no effect on idle.

:anger:
i put everything back together, fixed the pulsation dampner, didn't make a bit of difference. this is ridiculous, whats left for me to check??????? i changed the fuel filter, fuel pressure regulator, took out and inspected all the injectors, fixed the pulsation dampner.....what the heck is left? im totally puzzled now??? the ONLY thing i could even guess to check is to remove the fuel pump and check the filter/strainer. please help! |
