Need expert advice on housing (*pics*)
I've been working on a rebuild for about 3 weeks now. I've finally gotten everything torn down and mostly cleaned up, still a bit to go. But, here's my problem. I found what was causing the o-ring problem. The housing wall chipped off! I have the bruce turrentine video and he suggests a new housing, but I can't afford it. I either make it work with this housing or this engine doesn't get rebuilt, which isn't an option lol.
I've been searching and I've seen how some people did a fix involving putting block cement into the radiator and letting it sink into spots like this. If this holds then i'd think I'd be able to JB weld this. But, I wanted to get some opinions of people who have more experience. Has anyone tried something like this? Or if I took it to a machine shop could they weld a piece in there? What do you suggest? Here are the pics: http://i454.photobucket.com/albums/q...s/DSCF0126.jpg http://i454.photobucket.com/albums/q...s/DSCF0125.jpg And these are some pics of the other stuff, which all looks in great condition still. http://i454.photobucket.com/albums/q...s/housings.jpg http://i454.photobucket.com/albums/q...s/DSCF0128.jpg |
Used irons are cheap enough, I'd just replace it.
|
you need a new iron iron period, there is no way around this.
|
Yeah I wouldn't risk anything on that one. Any material bonded on there could come dislodged and tear up the inside of the engine. As far as welding goes, I'd be concerned about warping.
Like mentioned, used irons are cheap enough and easy to find. Practice porting on the old one ;). |
Okay. I'm going to get a used one then. Thank you. Joeylyrech, I see you live in allentown. I live in Reading. Do you know any places around here that might have a used one?
Where would you guys start looking for one? I don't have any time to wait around, I'm trying to get this done soon, like within a week or two. |
I might be able to help...
IS it a Front TII Side plate If so I have it $125.00 to your door |
You see how the housings got sort of rusty in the coolant passages? Is this going to be a problem later?

Should be easy to find

What year is your car? I assume s4. I might have one, but if you are rebuilding a s5 engine I have what you need.
|
Hmmm... can't remember where I found the information, but I had this same problem. What I did was take an apex seal spring, and lay it in place (on the pressure side of the housing of course!). I then used a little bit of jb weld to hold it in place. It worked quite well, never had an issue of coolant leaking again.
I don't recommend doing this, just letting you know what I did. |
I have a bunch of NA stuff but i need to check if i have a S4 plate,if i do give me 20.00$ and come and get it.

Yea definitely don't cheap out on this. Replace it, period. You'll just have wasted all your time and money if you gamble on a cheap fix. I'm in Washington. I got 2 na motors that are junk, but would be awesome sources for parts. I'll let you have both for cheap as hell if you come get em. You know what... PMed.

20 bcks for an iron. Thats like only 10 more dollars than jb weld=P
