Need a better ignition.
 

I have a 91 na with full exhaust, intake, and safc. Time to upgrade the ignition, but don't know which ignition to buy. I've heard good and bad things about msd 6a, but for a 170 dollars I think that's a little to much for a ignition. Are there any other coils that I could use? Are platinum spark plugs worth the extra money?:smoker: :smoker:

Jegs sells the MSD 6A for ~$130.&nbsp I prefer the Crane Cams HI-6 for ~$160 from Jegs.

Platinum spark plugs do NOTHING for performance - they just last a little longer.

The stock coils are plenty strong.&nbsp It's mess to swap them out for an aftermarket coil.

Any reason why you're hung up on ignition upgrades?&nbsp If you stock ignition system is in good working order, upgrading ignition components rewards you with minimal performance gains.

there is no need for the MSD or Crane ignitions on a second gen unless you are running 20 plus pounds of boost. make sure the stock system is in good condition and it will work with any modification you can do to a N/A RX7. I have used an MSD setup on one of our turbo II race cars and dynoed the setup and it made no extra power and the exhaust analysis was nearly identical. spend the money on something that will give some extra performance or fun. platinum plugs just last longer

I learned the hard way how good the stock ignition is.

I was losing upper end power and thougt maybe one of the coild wasn't firing, so I (ready to laugh?) started, one by one, pulling the the wires from the coils to see of the idle changed. When I pulled the first one off (with a towel wrapped around my hand) the coil continued to arc to the wire and my hand :eek: until it was more than 3 inches away from the coil. My hand felt a little funny for 30 minutes afterwards.

I checked the other 3 with much more insulation before concluding the coils were all firing fine.

:doh: you never pull the wires off while it's running. you take a wire off, hold it close to ground with another spark plug in it. then crank the engine over.

FYI, I put the crane hi-6 in my tII and I gained about 50km (30miles) a tank so It'l pay for itself pretty fast. well worth it for that reason alone. it did make it a bit smother too.
