Need 1991 RX-7 opinion

Well, i have been looking everywhere in my area for an rx-7. im looking at one today that i need your thoughts on.

it a convertible 1991. Has a 5 speed, and power everything. has a brand new red paint job and the interior looks like it has never been used:). im going to drive it today, and see how the engine is. it has 130,000 miles.

he's asking $4000, but not firm.

SirCygnus 08-30-06 10:13 AM

why would it need a new paint job if it was never driven? get a carfax report before you get it.

Got any pictures? $4K isn't bad if its in the condition you say its in and has no rust. Offer $3500 and see if he will go for it.

i agree fellas. i know when i drive it. its been driven, but the outside was repainted by the current owner cause he wanted a red one, and he worked in a body shop. and the inside, i dont know why it looks so good, but i was very very shocked.

It has a brand new paint job and it was driven. Hence the 130,000 miles. Could you be a bit MORE off?

Well, I guess you did have a good suggestion about the Carfax.

im looking forward to checking it out, but im not getting my hopes up. ive been looking at rx-7's for about 2 weeks, and there is ALWAYS something that meeses up the car.... the tranny, the seals, smoking when i start it. ugh....

For comparison, I picked up a 90 vert 2 summers ago in absolutely pristine condition with 47 K and only 8K on an Atkins rebuilt. Paid 4,200. Michigan purchase. My gut tells me 4,000 for a ride with 130,000 is fairly steep. Outside of the few who know and/or want a 7 there is not a great market for these cars.

I'm witth Juiceh 3,200 - 3,500 would be my limit.

zoomy942 08-30-06 11:52 AM

right on. if i can get him to 3,000-ish, and it drives okay, then i ll get it. we'll see. and yeah, the market sucks for rx-7's and im aching for one

heres the lowdown on that convertible.

first off, love the paint job and interior. everything works (even the stereo, which many of the 7's i have looked at didnt) and even the top still auto opens and closes. it isnt too cramped for me, being 6'5", its just like the coupes i have been in. by the way, it has 140K miles.

now onto the engine. started up great. jumped to 3k, then dropped to 1.5k. idled at 750ish just foine and didnt die everytime i revved it (which i HAVE seen before, and so has bruce...poor old rx-7). then i took it for a drive. all the gears engaged fine, and it revved up just fine also. didnt have the pickup i was thinking, but i think thats normal for an NA with 200lbs worth of convertible gear. you guys agree? one thing i noticed, which i think is normal, is when id get on it, and rev it up, as i switched gears (its a manual) as the revs dropped, it would make that pop noise from the exhaust. i have heard this before, and im assuming its nothing. the exhaust sounded amazing by the way.

by the way, it was newer tires as well.

If you are getting a backfire/popping when letting off the gas quickly it's not tuned right, probably running rich. Not a big deal to tune since it's idleing good.

Look at the FAQ for all the typical things to check, as with any old car check for rust underneath-rails, floors and suspension.

While there is not a big market for these cars a lot of them are in bad shape so it's up to you on price-3-4K is not bad in my opinion if the car is solid and looks good.

I paid $4400 for my vert 5 years ago with 103,000 miles, in very good shape.

OOOOOOORRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.......

It's completely normal for a rotary with no cats.

zoomy942 08-30-06 02:56 PM

no cats eh? hmm.. and i have buddy thats selling some headers for thie motor as well

YellowJacket7 08-30-06 02:59 PM

Obviously make sure you get the compression checked, and make sure to short start it.

Start it up, wait less than a minute (before it has a chance to warm up) and then turn it off. If it doesnt start right back up again, you may be in for problems.

4K is not a bad price for one that is in the condition you describe. For the interior to be nice, it had to have been garaged. I have 3 verts, the only one with a good interior is the one that I replaced the seats in. The others are needing work.

$4k is what they seem to go for in autotrader as well.

My son is 6'5" and we drove from San Fran to Atlanta in it when we bought it. He would like to eventually put a smaller steering wheel in to give him just a little bit more room. That one has 173K miles with about 40K on a rebuild. The PS hose just went, but with the belt disconnected, it doesn't leak any fluid!

Always ask for a lower price, it doesn't cost anything.

zoomy942 08-30-06 04:35 PM

when i looked in the engine bay, it was amazingly clean. im gonna ask him if the engine has been rebuilt. and i need to find out if any other mods have been done.

by the way, if i pick up some headers, how hard are they to install?

Boostmaniac 08-30-06 05:01 PM

headers takes about an hour with the right tools and a little know how.
