Name these wires...
 

While I was installing my taillights I found 2 cut, or what appears to be, cut wires. They were taped together with my drivers side license plate light. Anyone know what these two wires control? What also might help is that when I turn my lights on I blow the ILL fuse on the inside fuse box. All the lights work, instrument cluster, front fender lights, tailights. But as soon as the fuse blows....these all go out. Any suggestions there?

Below I've included a couple pictures of the two wires that have been cut. The colors of the wires are Blue and a Greenish-Yellow.

First off, I don't know. Second off, there were originaly some courtesy lights in the back hatch that would come on when you opened the hatch. They may have been wired under the ILL circuit...

cant see shit in those pics, but wires being cut should not cause you to blow a fuse. when troubleshooting the ILL circuit, keep in mind that it runs through basically every light in the whole car. I had one once where someone wired a radio ground into the dash ILL positive side. i started tracing at he switch, then went all the way around the whole car, and ended up 2 feet from where i started. if you've messed around in the dash lately, look there first.

I don'[t see those wires on the wiring diagram at all. Is it possible that this car has a trailer hitch and maybe those wires were spliced in to give pwr to the trailer lights?

If you have a fsm wiring diagram.....I'd try to isolate the problem by disconnecting the part of the harness that feeds the rear lights from the rest or disconnecting the part of the harness that feeds the instrument cluster.

I think Icemark has found the problem sometimes lies in the instrument switch harness.

I don't think I'd just change harness's out until you prove the exact source of the short. You need a manual with wiring diagrams and the locations of the various plugs that can be disconnected to do that.

If you don't have that, then you could isolate the problem by disconnecting each lights electrical plug til the fuses stop popping. This is on a series four car????????

That is not what appears in the pictures...

are you sure there are no stripes on those wires... that they are just Blue and Just light Green?

A solid Green is normally brakes lights or the hatch open trigger, but a light green with black stripe would be the key sensor for the alarm at the rea hatch.

There are a couple of blues (with stripes) for the power antenna on the drivers side rear as well as a solid Light green.

The fuse that I am blowing is a 15. It will not blow a 25 but will melt the wire before the fuse blows. The 15 fuse will blow in about 3 seconds. The color of the wires are Blue with Green stripes, and the other is Yellow with Green stripes. They are bound into the harness that runs along the top of the taillights. I also unhooked the rear lights harness and the fuse still blows. So I have eliminated the rear lights from being the problem. The wire that goes from the fuse box all the way up to the headlight switch is hot.

have you looked at the headlight switch and its harness yet???

I suspect that the wire and the blowing of the illum fuse have nothing in common.

Is this a GXL???

me too. are any of the other wires from the switch getting hot when its on? it could easily be a bad relay in the switch.

Im in the process of taking out the cluster right now. As far as I know there is only 1 wire getting hot from the switch. I will check again. The car is a 88 TII.

If you wanted to eliminate the possibility of the lights in the rear being the bad actor, do this: Next to the fuse box, just at the aft side of it, there are three (3) electrical plugs. One above the other. Remove the bottom plug and then insert another fuse. If the fuse still blew, then it isn't the rear lights.

FIXED IT! It ended up being the aftermarket cd player the previos owner rigged up. The Illumination from the car was hooked into the ground on the cd player (yes, he's a tard).
