NA to T2

Hello Guys,

Please dont be flame me lol

Ive been hunting the forums for a good while now. And i have a decent knowledge of cars.

I just blew my Transmission a few days ago.

89GXL

I would like for a few opinions.

1. Should i stick to NA? I Know its simpler if i just swap out the transmission.

2. I really want to go Turbo. But what do i have to do to do that? I have to swap out litterally everything? Ive been reading a few posts here and there and its all mixed answers.

My original thought was to swap slowly.

For Example, what i was going to do was just swap the

T2 Transmission
T2 Drive Shaft (MAzdatrix one?)
t2 Rear end?

and than eventually go turbo later but i want to just run the car with the t2 tranny
(Do i need anything else?)

MY QUESTION IS.

Is it possible to swap things out slowly? Are there any bad things to just swapping the transmission first?

Can someone post a link to a 13b NA to a 13b Turbo?

NA transmissions aren't that hard to find. If you're simply talking about a turbo drivetrain swap, it's overkill for an NA engine.

Many components aren't compatible between turbo and na transmissions, so it's an 'all at once' swap.
From the FAQ stickied at the top of the 2nd gen tech section:

Can I install the Turbo II transmission into an NA?

Certainly. But you need to also install:
-TII flywheel, clutch, pressure plate
-TII slave cylinder
-TII starter
-TII driveshaft, differential, axels
-Adapt the wiring.

MazdaTrix makes a TII transmission to NA rear end driveshaft, so if you don't want to swap your rear end, you can use that shaft instead.

Hopefully this link will help answer your turbo swap questions.

Thanks for the replies guys!

So i found an NA Transmission in my area. 120k Miles and wants a $100 but im sure i can talk him down a bit.

Few more questions

Is there a distinct way to tell if its an S4 NA Transmission?
Are there some things i can ask or look for to tell if its good?

He said he used Redline Gear Oil and never had any metal shavings come out of it.
