n/a turbo conversion

Heres the rundown:

Rebuilt n/a block
upper and lower s5 tii intakes port matched
s5 throttle body with s4 tps
s5 stock turbo and manifold
S4 tii injectors
stock s4 ecu, maf, pressure sensor
tii fuel pump

1987n/a rx7

Question:
Can i run the safcII with the stock electrics to perform boost and map out fuel?

boosted414 05-09-12 01:49 PM

rewire the fuel pump to constant 12v (search for the write up). stock exhaust and downpipe or aftermarket? i dont suggest this setup but it can work.

Timing is crucial on a high comp turbo setup and the SAFC is a serious liability in that regard. Combine that with the s4 n/a (you didn't mention it being turbo) ecu and the life expectancy for this engine is not particularly high.

Also, I hope those fuel injectors have been recently cleaned and flow tested, and even then I would reccomend at LEAST 720 secondaries and an rtek 1.7 (a 2.1 would be a much better setup)

2 the OP,i had a S5 Turbo block with S4 na rotors, street ported,s5 turbo and manifold, ported throtle body, stock 550cc injectors,3 inch downpipe 2 a borla catback running 10psi daily on a third gen fuel pump and fcd and it ran perfect,no everboost no pinging pulling hard no complaints at all,the motor did die but cause a coolant wall failure nothing 2 do with the high comp turbo setup.

joeylyrech 05-09-12 04:24 PM

you do need all the s4 turbo electronics no the na crap,if you use the na stuff it will blow up.

The N/A car's electronics do not include a fuel resistor relay like the TII body has.

beachFC 05-10-12 01:27 AM

N/A's do have fuel resistor relays

bumpstart 05-10-12 01:36 AM

s4 na doesnt

Joey is right, i'm running a s4 street ported n/a keg with 9.4 rotors. 550/600cc combo safc II and s4 tii ecu with sensors and fcd. Running 15psi on a hybrid I made equivalent to a bnr stage 3-4 on stock s5 hotside. Running fd fuel pump as well, with 3" down pipe to greddy duel exhaust. Also running the fuel pump hot wired to a switch. Everything blocked off no emissions, only thing on the motor is tps, ait, pressure sensor, maf, and engine coolant temp.

Run's well been daily driving it for about 5 months no problem, also this is a weekend warrior that sees drift and road race shenanigans.

boosted414 05-10-12 08:58 AM

^^ this guy also blows motors every few months. ask me how i know ;)

You're running a 300+ whp turbo on essentially stock injectors and an SAFC? I'm surprised it's lasted beyond its first full throttle pull.

Afr's?!

How have you not blown it already?

blackrotary23 05-10-12 04:50 PM

I have the s4 tii maf and ecu. I dont have a boost sensor nor can i find one. The injectors are good, i tested them and they flow very well.

How "exactly" do i hot wire the fuel pump? I suck at reading schematics but good with hands on and step by step. I know there are alot of rotorheads out there who hate these types of posts but i really need the help guys without sarcasm please. I actually drove the car up the street and back and it ran very well without boosting or trying to get it to boost.

I have aftermarket fuel pressure regulator on it. What should i set fuel pressure at?

I am putting every tii part on the car i have minus the boost/pressure sensor anf fcd which i do not have. I am on a really tight budget. Can only pay cash for parts here in town. Please help a fellow rx7 enthusiast. Im still learning and really want to drive my car with it running safely tbis summer.

blackrotary23 05-10-12 05:00 PM

All i have left to do is fcd, pressure sensor, and hot wire fuel pump. Then its where it needs to be minus tuning. How should i set the safcii safely?

On the safcii under etc., then display scale, the options are as follows:

PR: 760mmHg, 1.0kg/cm2, 2.0kg/cm2, 0kPa, 100kPa, or 200kPa. Which one do i need to set it at?
Then the Cr is either +-3, 6, 9,15, or30. Which one should i set this at?

Got this used and no manual and no threads, sites, or forums explain this section.

joeylyrech 05-10-12 05:04 PM

you need the pressure sensor if not the ecu wont know that is under boost and it wont add fuel

blackrotary23 05-10-12 05:09 PM

Ill get one. I want some rx heads to help me get this thing right. Everybody who who helps me get my car setup "properly" i am going to put a dedication on my hatch with everyones rx7club name.

If its cool with everyone, lol

MacGyver 05-10-12 06:50 PM

I have a copy of the manual, I can post up the wiring diagram later.

I would suggest correcting off of boost rather than throttle position with the SAFCII. If you need more details how to do this and settings I'll try to help. I have a similar setup (9.4:1, S5TII ECU AFM MAP, SAFCII, Walbro, 550cc injectors) and have ran with no issues for over 2 years.

88t2fc3s 05-10-12 11:36 PM

I just recently finished my 6 port turbo in my T2. I used the Turbo 2 accessories and a S4 N/A block with a TO4E and a RTEK 1.7. It runs great and pulls like a freight train. If you'd like to see one then shoot down to Louisville and i'll show/explain everything i did.

misterstyx69 05-10-12 11:46 PM

If you have an S4 N/A car then you do not have to "hotwire" the fuel pump.It gets 12 volts. No drops.

2slow4stock 05-11-12 02:50 AM

lol Bill, I only blow motors when I pulled out the laptop for the e6k. :P I'm playing with the stock electronics and I'm confident in it, unlike my untuned e6k.

But RXSpeed16 - Yes stock TII primarys and stock FB secondaries I have the safc II on there with adding fuel to the map, so technically I am "retarding" the timing at certain throttle points.

Beach - I am seeing 11-12.2 afr's around 15psi. My 15psi spike drops around 6,700 but holds at 11 and afr's are around 10.5-11.1ish. This is the same motor that came in the car when I traded it for my crx. Oh mind you this is still on a TII fuel pump, I have an fd pump I'm going to swap out later on, because I plan on upping the boost a few more psi.

When I mean hot-wire, I have it wired to a switch for easier starting.

blackrotary23 - I just noticed your a state away, if you ever come around chicago area or if I go out that way, you can check out my set up and go for a ride.

beachFC 05-11-12 07:00 PM

^^^ I'm inspired.. Gonna start collecting shit. I wish I had an s4 motor to do the conversion with though.

fuel calc is via the MAF and air temps and atmo pressure sensors

on the FC the MAP sensor is used to determine ignition retard under boost ( and adv under vacuum )
if you use the NA sensor it will be at max output at around 2 psi ,, if you use the turbo sensor then the same voltage will co-relate with 10 psi +

using the NA sensor will in-fact amount to excessive ( maximum ) timing retard at as low as 2 psi

There's a SAFC forum on this site. The link above shows what is on that part of the site. Seems there's a manual you can download. Try that.

blackrotary23 06-29-12 09:31 AM

Got widband and safc all wired up. Engine starts, runs good at idle. 13.5 a/f. What is the safest wag to tune my setup with safc?

Intercooler piping stock tii electronics, s5 turbo, tii fuel pump. 1/4 throttle reads 100% on safc. Tried to tie into boost sensor wire....didnt work. No throttle response on safc through boost sensor. Reads 33.8% constant.
