My first guess is the thermosensor connector.
(you may be getting a "check engine" code 3.)
It's on the back of the water pump housing under the alternator.
It can come loose, or the connector pins can back up inside the plug.

Or your thermostat could be bad. It fits below the filler neck that connects the upper radiator hose to the radiator.

I think sureshot is on the right track here. Sounds like a connection fell off.

hey guys, the water thermo sensor on the water pump housing sends a variable voltage to the ECU,not the temp gage. I think the sensor you want to look at is near the left aft side of the engine, screwed in to the rear side housing, near the oil filter

I would definitely check the sensor connectors where you were working. Everytime I do some maintenance or change a hose it seems that I unknowingly loosen or disconnect a few sensors. If you are getting no readings at all it is most likely a loose or disconnected sensor wire. Read your engine codes, they will point you to the problem.

WAYNE is right. Thermo gage is not by the waterpump, its in the rear side housing. I have the same problem, and assuming it is the thermo gage itself that has gone bad.
I guess its a common problem.
Good luck,
