Are my side irons bad? (huge pix, 56k don't bother!)
Alright, here's the first pic. In the top right hand corner you will see two tiny scratches, they just barely catch a finger nail (it won't hang up on it, just sort of dips into it) It's just hardly noticable, should it be replaced/lapped? Will lapping fix it?
http://www.sonicrat.org/~rat/cars/rx...3/DCP_1517.JPG Here's the pic of my intermediate/whatever housing. It's got what appears to be very very minor surface rust? It didn't appear to be rust at first, it looked like burnt on carbon (had a bad oil seal on this rotor), after cleaning it up, there's this rough spot left below, doesn't catch your finger nail, but it is a tiny bit rough. Replaced/lapped? http://www.sonicrat.org/~rat/cars/rx...3/DCP_1519.JPG If you need any more pictures for better detail/etc just ask and I'll post them. |
i dunno, but that picture is almost desktop image worthy!
Haha, I just wish i could find out if i need to replace them/get them lapped or whatever.
Lapping should fix it if the plate hasn't been lapped before. If it has, then it would be possible for the plate to become too thin. Without feeling it or having hard numbers from measurements, its hard to tell.
what could I measure it with? a Dial gauge doesn't read anything on it because it's too narrow, or do you mean the overall thickness of the housing?
Bla bla bla just use it hehe
If you pay to rebuild it when my oil seals go to hell, I will :)
Oh, another question, would it be bad to glass bead the rotor housings to clean them up?
If it's one small area, I wouldn't worry about it.  Trying to get another housing would be a royal pain in the ass right now. :) It looks like surface rust errosion to me...

That's what I thought, but when I took it apart it looked like carbon burnt onto it, most of it wiped right away, but there's just that tiny little area. Any suggestions on the two little dings on the other? :)
Other two dings?  I can't see the rest of the damage... :(
-Ted |
You be blind ted! First picture, upper right hand corner near the corner seal track, there's two little 'lines', again, they hardly are noticable, but they're there :(
Can't answer your Qs, but wanted to say those look like Hubble shots of some weird planet in some alternate rotary universe. :D
Hey, when did Ted move to Honolulu? I thought you were in Las Vegas. I can't get onto your site anymore. I must have missed all the action. Damn...
Hell, he's not even in Hawaii right now, he's off in england or something somewhere. That guy travels more than my car breaks, and that's pretty damn often! :)
Thats not the motor I sent you is it?
My engine builder will not build an engine without lapping the plates unless they are almost perfect. He was so hardcore about that, he built his own lapping table.
That's a fucked housing. :) Is that another rust spot?  Can you run your fingers over it and feel anything? -Ted |

i thought he was referring to the one he posted *shrug*
Aha, didn't quite put two and two together, thanks for the info. I tried to get your crate to the shippers today, but they said they couldn't take it today, so I'm scheduled to drop it off on monday. Still trying to find those PP bolts.
Originally posted by SonicRaT it feels like tiny bits of carbon, it won't catch a finger nail and it's pretty smooth moving over it. Which one is fucked, the one with the two tiny dings on it? -Ted |
I'm going to pull the tranny tomorrow morning. and Get it prepped. I could spend a week just detailing the bottom of my car anyway. Would be mostly repairing rust damage anyway. Good luck with your housings.
