Is my oil pressure right?

Just finally got my 7 on the road... Hasnt been driven in A LONG TIME. When its cold its got great oil pressure. Its about 50-60lbs. but once i drove it around a bunch it would drop down to 20-25lbs at an idle. Is this a little low?

your fine when im at idle i get about 10 and when im driving i get around 50 but of course it will fluctuate when your letting off the gas an i havent had any problems with my engine at all

Great! Thank you!!

I wouldn't trust your figures if you are simply reading the oil pressure guage in the dash guage panel.

yeah, its the gauge in the dash.

The cold oil will cause higher pressure when it's cold.

Assuming the gauge is correct, you should be seeing around 20-30lbs at idle and 60lbs or so above 3000 RPM when it's fully warmed up. Those numbers will be a bit lower if you're using the winter 5W-30 instead of the summer 20W-50.

i have no idea whats in there as far as oil... Its the same oil thats been in the car for the last 8 years while it sat dead. lol

SonicRaT 08-28-05 03:47 AM

And you haven't changed it why?

rx7b13 08-28-05 03:48 AM

maybe you should change it

i know the dealership uses 5w-20 but i suppose it really matter on where you live and what the climate you are in

and also which state from the midwest are you from

Well, Honestly i dont care to change it. It looks really clean. I bought the car cheap and it didnt run. I HATE not knowing whats wrong with something so I had to tinker with it and I got it running. I am going to put a 383ci stroker in this car. So, the 13b is just to have a little fun with for a while. It will be a while before i get the stroker done, and find a decent price on a t56 tranny so I just want to putt this around without putting money into it. i have 3 other vehicles to drive so i dont rely on this one. If i pop the motor, oh well... I would pull it and sell it but it doesnt seem like these 13b's are worth much.

Im from Kansas

FIRST, verify with a known good mechanical oil pressure gauge that the readings are true.
There's a good chance the stock oil pressure sensor is bad.
Replace it if it's bad.

Now, if the oil pressures readings are reading lower, you've got a bigger problem on your hands...
Blown front cover o-ring...
Bad thermowax...
All are BAD and can lead to the premature failure of your engine.

Oil pressure is paramount in importance to the rotary engine.
This is why Mazda hooked up the loud-ass buzzer to the LOW OIL sensor.

soo.... 20-25lbs of oil pressure when the engine is at running temp and idling at about 600rpm is too low?
