my new cold air box!

I made it myself. It's a little rough around the edges but I think it will do until I get the box from mariah motors. What does everyone think?

Gimpdiggity 12-31-01 03:22 PM

Looks don't matter as long as it functions well!!!

Good job man!!

Screw Mariah, looks like you did a damn good job yourself.

I agree on the inside it is functional that matters.

what all should a cold air "box" consist of? i see that this one isnt neccessarily a "box," persay. i was thinking of making one out of insulated fiberglass with an internal metal lining. does it just need to be semi-isolated from engine bay heat? would a air inlet headlight cover and the stock scuba snorkel suffice for enough air flow and have the rest blocked off?

an easy way to do it, provided you have a cone intake is to make a card board mold first to tweak the design the way you want it to look and function. and then when thats ok just use it as a template for either sheetmetal, flashing, fiberglass, etc. i think whatever material u use its gonna get hot...so its up to you :)

how well does fiberglass hold up to heat

HKS adapter for $20 or $30 from k2rd.com and cone K&N filter of your choice for about $40

Don't sweat the cold air thing too much, probably matters about 1/10th of 1 horsepower. Especially if there's no way for air to get to it in the first place.

BTW, stay away from the HKS filters, their adapters are great, but the filters are too open. Granted they flow great, but over time that little extra bit of dust will hurt your engine.

I wish I had some pics of mine, but I work at a shop that works with a special exterior aluminum panel, that actually consists of two THIN aluminum sheets with a thermoplastic core between them (called reynoldbond)
I CNC cut the peices, routered and bent them, then used foam to seal it up to the hood and put a small scoop on the hood above it!
It honestly looks like part of the car, No tape needed or anything like that. It's rock solid, well insulating, and easily removable/assembled.
A lot of people have asked me about it, and I will get some pics up whenever I get a camera!
Cold air + ram air!
