My Free 88 TII Part 2: Stripped and Resurrected (Pics)

Well I let the ATF sit for about a week and tried to turn the engine and it turned just fine. So I hooked everything back up and it took a long time to start, but it just needed some starting fluid and it fired right up. Surprisingly it didn't blow out too much smoke and it's idleing smooth but high, I guess the gas stabilizer did a pretty good job. I'm gonna go to the junkyard today and get a battery for it, pump up the tires, and rig up the stuff in the interior that I need to drive it. Then it will be good to go. The interior is completely stripped now so the next step is to clean everything and get new carpet, then the interior will be done. The paint is decent, just needs some good buffing and a few of the dents fixed and it'll look real good.

The Part 2 pics are on Picture Trail temporarily for now until I can get my extra hosting space on AT&T working right, so as soon as I can use AT&T again I will put them up with Part 1, and eventually Part 3. So here are the pics...

Anyone know what that black box is for? It connects to that black wire that goes up to the rear window. I think it's for an old cell phone setup.

Here is the original thread: https://www.rx7club.com/forum/showth...5&pagenumber=3

PS: Total cost was $40 to actually get the car running (including $24 Title transfer fee and minus the $12.50 in change I found in the car).

Brian S 05-05-03 05:49 PM

Holy cow, the tree is gone, and the car is like mint.....

Mazda did a pretty shitty job in wiring our cars, and over time, the cold-solder joints tend to fail in the logicon and dashboard. These failures manifest themselves by switches that don't work, heater controls that have a mind of their own, and electrical fires underhood. :)

These problems tend to crop up more in the 86-88 RX-7s, but it's not unheard of for 89-91 owners to have problems with wiper switches that only work when set to "intermittent".

nonameo 05-05-03 08:22 PM

wanna sell some of those stripped out interior parts, or are you going to put it all back together?

Relisys190 05-05-03 08:41 PM

Damn good job. Now all you have to do is either clean the crap out of the carpet or get one from a junk yard.

QUAID 05-05-03 11:52 PM

Holy shit! Looken good now. I can't call you swamp thing anymore. BTW did you find the evil squirrel that shit on your battery?

man i'd just take the logicon and heater shit out, get some nice sparco torino racing seats, maybe some carpet, put the dash back in, and be done with the interior (oh yeah maybe the door panels too).
i think cars look badass with just some nice racing seats and thin black carpet to cover up the metal with otherwise "stripped" interior. like jsut enough fabric to cover up the metal in the front of the car.

i ran my turboII for a couple weeks with a stripped rear. all i had was the seats, carpet and dash. no door panels no speakers no cd player, it was pretty hardcore.

QUAID 05-06-03 12:51 AM

Dude Jacob I laugh everytime you post.

DC350 05-06-03 01:01 AM

nice job man you went hardcore!

RXSevenSymphonies 05-06-03 01:11 AM

Ok today I got a battery and started it up and let the car warm up a bit. After it warmed up and burned off all the rest of the ATF, it idled nice and smooth at around 700 rpm I think. Then I drove it around in a circle and parked it the opposite direction just to see if it drives, and it drove just fine.

I think the windshield wipers don't work at all right now, I plugged that all back in and tried them and they didn't work on any setting at all, so thats 1 thing to fix. Also, the key buzzer noise stays on all the time no matter what I do, even when the car is running, so I gotta figure out what I need to plug in to make it stop. Other than that the car works great so far.:D

Yes, I am going to keep all the interior parts and put it all back together along with new carpet.

No, I don't have the faceplate for the deck, it belongs to the people that gave me the car so they wanted me to take all the stereo equipment out and give it to them.

Yes, I know the wheels are mixed up, my friend who works at Discount Tire pointed that out the day I got the car, I'll fix it after I bring the tires down to him to fix the leaks.

QUAID 05-06-03 01:18 AM

Are you sure its the buzzer for the key and not for the coolant level?

RXSevenSymphonies 05-06-03 01:21 AM

Well the buzzing noise is coming from the gauge cluster. And I just filled the coolant up so it should be ok, but I'll check it tomorrow to make sure, I'll plug the idiot lights back in and see whats goin on with them too.

QUAID 05-06-03 01:30 AM

Also check oil level

xDmoneYx 05-06-03 04:16 AM

hey, you know your rear tires are on backwards right?

vicious525E 05-06-03 06:51 AM

lol......have you ever seen that movie swamp man??? thats what your car reminded me of the the first set of pics

FCdemon 05-06-03 10:18 AM

damn... that's going to be one sick free car! get a S5 black interior from a junkyard and you'll have the pimp ride.

jon88se 05-06-03 11:12 AM

it's probably the coolant level sensor...there's a wire that should run to the top of the radiator thats probably not connected...if it warms up fine and doesnt over heat thats it :)

RXSevenSymphonies 05-06-03 12:50 PM

Yea it probably is the coolant level sensor wire, I noticed that there is a wire on top of the radiator that isn't connected to anything, so I'll fix that and hopefully the buzzing will go away. Where does that wire connect to?

Yes, I know the rear wheels are on backwards.

haha why is that man.

RXSevenSymphonies 05-06-03 10:21 PM

Yep I plugged in the idiot lights and that says add coolant, so its gotta be the cut coolant level sensor wire. So I looked around in the engine bay a bit and I couldn't find where it used to be connected, so where does it go? I did a search too and couldn't find anything so far, but I'll continue my search and see if I can find and answer.

knightkarr 05-06-03 11:41 PM

keep trying buddy :)

JasonL 05-07-03 01:51 AM

You'll have to solder it in on the connector which is located ontop of your radiator. It's on the passenger side of the lid for the radiator I think. Don't have my car here or I'd go check ;(

RXSevenSymphonies 05-07-03 02:07 AM

Alright, I looked at the FSM wiring diagrams and it seems that the wire goes to a harness under the airbox. Someone said that same thing in a thread when I was searching, so I went out and took the airbox completely out and looked around that area for a cut wire but I couldn't find anything. I guess I'll have to look harder tomorrow. I'll probly jack the car up and look under it for any hanging wires, because there is a lot of wire thats left connected to the sensor, like 2 or 3 ft worth.

RXSevenSymphonies 05-08-03 12:07 AM

Yay, I found where the wire was cut and hooked it back up real good, no more buzzer, no more idiot lights on, car is runnin good.

RXSevenSymphonies 07-10-03 06:01 AM

Well I got all the parts linked together on my site now.

The past couple days I worked on takin off the front bumper cover to figure out what to do about the passenger headlight getting jammed. So I figured out its just gettin jammed on the bumper because its bent severely from when the guy hit something or something hit him. Im thinkin I'll just take the bumper off and drill out the mounting holes so that I can mount it farther out where it is supposed to be. After thats fixed, I'm gonna fix the windshield wipers. Then get new carpet and put the interior back together. I'll keep updating with pics and stuff. I guess this is Part 2.5.

Well...Actually I guess you should put a seat in and stuff...But then go get it weighed!

knightkarr 07-10-03 11:23 AM

damn, your sooooo lucky dude! I'd like to get a TII for free even if I had to do twice of what your doing :D

- Carlos

RXSevenSymphonies 04-09-04 01:42 AM

Now that it's warm out again I'll be workin on my car more. I'm gonna get some interior pics up in a couple days... pretty much all of the interior is back together now. Pics are new and improved 800x600 now too.
