My first Turbo … keys to longevity?
I am totally rebuilding this engine from the ground up and once I am done I don’t want to redo it anytime soon. What should I do, or not do to make sure I get some miles out of this engine. 3mm seals? Don’t get pressure over 10?? Etc. Etc. I want this thing to last and doing it right the first time no matter what it costs is something I would like to do.
Thanks |
Don't let anybody borrow it. :p:

I think 3mm apex seals really aren't necessary unless your really paranoid or have some money to throw away. I you don't care about the money, go for the 3mm seals.

keep it away from Mazda dealers !!

work on the problems yourself. Dont take it to any mechs unless they are known to the rotary community..
Im also rebuilding my own motor and this are the things im going to do that i think will make it last longer.. Remove OMP and run premix oil change every 2K miles will watch and monitor all the fluids. 80-85 psi oil pressure regulator water jacket mod (maybe) no boosting over 15 psi with big turbo and e6k (chicken i know!) |
I wouldn't let anyone othere than you or someone that knows about Turbo rotarys come near it.
I think the stock apex seal are sufficient with the boost you will be running. If you want to be safer for a little cheaper go for the 2piece 2mm's. Definatly get a good boost gauge and port your wastegate if you have the stock setup. This will insure ya don't overboost and pop something. Good luck! |
If you have a lil cash to spend, look into getting a popoff valve. That way, if you get any boost spikes, atleast your motor is not going to be seeing it.

1) Keep the engine cool - this means upgrade radiator and keep the oil in good condition.
2) Up the oil pressure - using the 80-85psi Racing Beat upgrade OPR. 3) Run an oil baffle pan - keeps oil supply in good shape. Run a good quality oil - this ensures good lubrication AND cooling. If you want to run more boost, make sure you've got enough fuel. -Ted |
i just bought a TII w/ 120,000 miles idles fine and runs good no mods. do u guys think an engine rebuild is in my near future if i start modding.
