Yah the 4" one should be more than enough. I got the 6" one because it was on sale for the same price as the 4" when I bought it, so I figured why not.

But for measuring internals and clearances and such, you don't need anything very big.

88t2romad 06-11-05 03:42 PM

looks like your project is making good progress.

When i eventaully make it back to washington i will get you that lsd!! i promise, i havnt forgot about you.

ddub 06-11-05 04:00 PM

Hehe, no worries I'm not in any rush :)

Yes, very much so. This engine is still a long ways away, I'm taking everything very slowly and measuring every component, and paying great attention to every detail. This time around I'm not screwing around :)

My current engine is still doing great, but I want to make sure this new one is perfect, or as perfect as I can do.

Jacob, felix, static -

It's definitely fun. And since I have a working (very well so) engine right now I am in absolutely no hurry with this one. That way I have a lot more time to pay attention to everything, its a much more comforting feature :)

About time for an update...

Nothing much has been happening with the engine lately mainly because I had no parts! Today the mailman dropped off a package from Mazdatrix, though :)

They were backordered on a couple things, and couldn't even get one of the parts I wanted for at least 60 days! I was going to use RX8 front and rear stationary gears as an upgrade, but apparently they couldn't find anywhere in the country that had the rear in stock, and Mazda was backordered on them. They said it would take at least 60 days to get an order in from Mazda in Japan, but I don't have that kinda time to waste, so I kept the front stationary gear an RX8 one and changed the rear to the Racing Beat hardened with 3-window bearing.

Needless to say, shipping was delayed enough, and the stuff finally arrived today! Still need to make a drive down to Atkins to pick up a few more pieces, and take a trip to the Mazda dealership for a couple other things, but I should be able to start building soon, hopefully. Also still need to port and find a place to lap my irons, but the puzzle is coming together.

And now, for the pics!

I couldn't contain my excitement when I saw the package at the front door.

Opening her up.

http://home.comcast.net/~rx7projects...-11-2005/2.jpg

All the parts.

http://home.comcast.net/~rx7projects...-11-2005/3.jpg

At this point I decided to itemize all the parts since I had spent so much money, wanted to make sure it was all there!

Mmmm, competition rotor bearings... Brand new...

http://home.comcast.net/~rx7projects...-11-2005/4.jpg

Brand new side seal springs.

http://home.comcast.net/~rx7projects...-11-2005/5.jpg

Wee! Brand new oil control ring springs with competition outer ones and stock inner.

http://home.comcast.net/~rx7projects...-11-2005/6.jpg

New front e-shaft spring.

http://home.comcast.net/~rx7projects...-11-2005/7.jpg

E-shaft plug.

http://home.comcast.net/~rx7projects...-11-2005/8.jpg

Yum, Mazda OEM apex seal springs to go along with my RA seals.

http://home.comcast.net/~rx7projects...-11-2005/9.jpg

ddub 07-11-05 05:34 PM

Cont'd

New copper washer for front pulley bolt.

http://home.comcast.net/~rx7projects...11-2005/10.jpg

New thermostat and gasket.

http://home.comcast.net/~rx7projects...11-2005/11.jpg

Brand new competition thrust bearings.

http://home.comcast.net/~rx7projects...11-2005/12.jpg

Two oil pan gaskets to go along with my RB oil pan baffle.

http://home.comcast.net/~rx7projects...11-2005/13.jpg

Front cover gasket.

http://home.comcast.net/~rx7projects...11-2005/14.jpg

Mazda OEM o-ring set.

http://home.comcast.net/~rx7projects...11-2005/15.jpg

MFR oil pressure regulator (105-115psi).

http://home.comcast.net/~rx7projects...11-2005/16.jpg

RX8 front stationary gear, look at the wonderful multi-window'd bearing!

http://home.comcast.net/~rx7projects...11-2005/17.jpg

Cont'd x2

Racing Beat rear hardened/3-window bearing stationary gear.

http://home.comcast.net/~rx7projects...11-2005/19.jpg

http://home.comcast.net/~rx7projects...11-2005/20.jpg

Now this is the part that hurt to see. All itemized and totalled, that hurt the wallet, and that doesn't even include other stuff I have bought or still need to :(

Anyways, that's everything that came here today! For those interested in what else is going into and being used in this engine, here's a quick list.

- TII oil pump
- TII exhaust sleeves with low mileage/good condition s5 n/a housings
- S5 n/a rotors
- S5 n/a irons, porting scheme not fully decided yet
- RB oil pan baffle
- RA apex seals
- FD corner springs
- New solid corner seals
- Atkins viton oil rings
- New t/o bearing
- New pilot bearing/seal
- New front/rear main seals
- New front regulator spring
- New oil cooler spring/thermostat
- E-shaft oil jets mod (weber #200's)
- Racing Beat main underdrive pulley
- Aluminum flywheel
- ACT clutch
- Megasquirt with new spark application
- Deciding on manifold setup still
- Hopefully 9k rpm operation without too much power dropoff
- S4 front cover/waterpump

I think that's everything.

Wankel7 07-11-05 05:41 PM

Wow, your invoice makes me cry...why didn't you sign up for Mazda Motor Sports?

The price of a new oil pump from Mazdatrix / Dealer is nuts!

Never the less good to see your doing it the right way!

Don't race and don't have time! I'm in college currently and working towards a business degree with concentration in Finance and economics, and I go to school year round (meaning summer too). Between that, my various rx7 and rx8 projects, my gf, and trying to still have somewhat of a life, I just don't have time for racing events to be qualified for Mazda Motorsports.

felixwankel88 07-11-05 05:56 PM

omg DROOOL i want, good luck with your rebuild, this engine is gonna be CRAZY!!!!

Wankel7 07-11-05 05:56 PM

Damn just roll down the strip twice:)

Never the less....your doing it right!

Having a new oil pump is great! My old pump was like .002 away from out of spec. New pump makes for great pressure.

Heh, nearest strip is an hour away, and they only have open days for people like me 1 or 2 times a week I think, one of them being Friday. Just not enough time in the day, it'd be so much easier if I didn't have to sleep :)

JLa 07-12-05 01:53 AM

You could always do a couple of WWSCC auto crosses up at Everett, and I think the drag strip at Pacific Raceways is open to the public on days besides the Test and tune days, but I'd have to double check on that.

Mx6-Rx7 Addict 07-12-05 02:04 AM

Wow solid corner seals? Are you doing this to prevent the rubber plugs on the standard corner seals from falling into the bridge?

Justin

Yah, when things calm down for me I'll look into that stuff, but for now I just have too many projects and too little time :|

I was going to go with new corner seals anyways, figured I'd go with solid.

wha  ?!?!

Where did this come from?!

CrazyDude 07-12-05 12:03 PM

You're going to run turbo exhaust port sleeves on an NA? It's going to be loud, I'll tell ya that.

coldfire 07-12-05 12:38 PM

looks great man, it's giving me a lot of good ideas :)

and thank god you are only using PARTS from turbo engines. please don't even think of touching one of those silly snail thingies if you can make such great NA engines as this one is going to be ;)
