My clutch is making funny noises!

Whenever the car is driving in reverse it sounds like a bunch of knives scraping each other. it seems to be coming from the clutch area. and when driving in 2nd or 3rd gear and letting off the gas, it makes the same scraping sound, but if i push in the clutch it stops.:(

tims 11-01-01 09:14 AM

sounds like the trans not the clutch. does it make any noise in neutral? check or change the fluid and see what happens. otherwise may need a tear down to find exact problem. might check or change the diff fluid also. check that aren't any heat shields or motor/trans mounts that are broken.

dre_2ooo 11-01-01 09:36 AM

POW, POW, POWER WHEELS

Thats the sound a manual transmission car makes in reverse..:D

Yeah, sounds like the trans to me too... :( How many miles are on it, Try putting in some RedLine trans fluid and Differential fluid too. If if still makes the noise, you may be needing a rebuild...:(
Perhaps you can find a used one on Ebay or thepartstrader.com or somehting.

My clutch makes a noise though. When the clutch is engaged in neutral, it sounds like an electric motor is runnnig , kinda high pitched. When i press the pedal in, it stops. Is this clutch chatter? What is clutch chatter?

Samps 11-01-01 10:13 AM

the tranny was put in by KD Rotary and it was rebuilt. it only has about 3000 miles on it. the car used to be an automatic and the rebuild was put in during the conversion. :(

that sound like the throwout bearing to me. that would not be clutch chatter.

demonracer 12-30-01 01:28 PM

I also think it could be the throwout bearing. Dont overlook the driveshaft either. If the U joints are going bad or its out of balance it would create the noise you described. Good luck.

ACTION RT 12-30-01 01:58 PM

I have the same noise....

the power wheels whine... when the clutch is out, but when i put it in it stops. When i put it in reverse and back up it sounds like rusty/broken springs? you know how you always jump on the couch and stuff? like that.,

my dad thinks its the U-Joints?

what shoudl i do

DJChunter 01-08-02 03:13 PM

My 87 GXL made a similar sound and so did my buddy phil old 87 T2 we both took them to the local rotary shop and they told us that its the pilot bearing and it nothing to worry about they just kinda whine. Dunno if its the same prob just thought I would give you my $.02

NOPE! never figured it out yet. The car is just sitting around all winter in its new garage. Next summer I will probably just drive the shit out of it untill it doesn't run any more then I will fix it. I already have a new clutch and bearings but I don't feel like putting them on right now because the car still runs great; it just makes some noises. The noises are kinda nasty but as long as it stills runs o.k. I see no point in messing with it. I could probably get another summer out of the parts on it right now. I only drive the car about 4000 miles a year so a lil noise is no big deal. I think it is a broken clutch; a mechanic freind of mine said that it could be a broken rivet on the clutch that is scrapping. I don't believe it is the tranny because it does it in every gear, and most tranny noises will die out in 4th because it is a 1:1 ratio straight through (I could be wrong). Maybe a bad bearing or maybe even the drive-shaft. But my drive shaft has no play in it and all of the heat shields are in perfect working order. This is a problem I wish I could fix but probably won't. If you figure it out please let me know.

Jaemie 01-08-02 03:59 PM

pilot bearing or release bearing?

I'm going to call my local RX7 mechanic and get his 2 cents as well.

It looks like I'll be getting into this problemo before you all do. Mine is really loud, and quite frankly embarrassing! My tranny has been rebuilt from the ground up before...the clutch is working great...and the driveshaft/ujoint was replaced (although I used a used one) not too long ago. The drive shaft/ujoint, when it goes out it makes more thunking and vibration at faster speeds than this crazy spring-like knivesharpener stuff it is doing now. From what I have been reading here my take is it probably is the pilot and/or throw out/release bearing

Anyone know if the pilot and realase bearing are two seperate things?

I'll post more if I find anything out.

THE PILOT BEARING IS THE CULPRIT!!

Just called a couple RX7 shops here in So. Cal and they have confirmed that the pilot bearing is what makes the noise in reverse and sometimes in forward gears. It goes away when clutch is pressed in. Pilot also makes it kinda tough to go into 1st thru 4th gears (mine has been doing that for quite a while now).

Parts are cheap but they have to drop the tranny to replace them. I was quoted $50-70 for parts (throw out and pilot bearings) and $175 for labor. I was also quoted $400 at another place.

Hope the info helps!!

Sounds like the pilot bearing to me...:(

guys I posted a thread on this noise

To those whom are concerned. I put a thread on this matter a week or so ago. I got the same prediction that it was the throw out bearing , so I got it changed with no result . Yes, with me also, the noise dissapears when you press on the clutch . I say its not the drive shaft because the noise dissapears while i press on the clutch and the car is rolling, which you would know that if you do this the shaft moves when your wheels are moving even thow your tranny is not in gear. I checked all my heat sheilds and they are ok. So I went ahead and got all the bearings on the tranny replaced, Which is what the average tranny shop will say is a rebuilt job in addition to all the seals. I also did this with no result. Then finnaly I took the car to a freind at a Mazda Dealer , WITCH EVEN THOUGH WE DON"T WANT TO ADMIT TO IT ,they are the real pros when it comes to the car. HE explaned that it wasn't any of the above but that I should have replced all of the insides of the tranny when rebuit and not just the bearings. And at times the tranny housing warps out in some areas, if you rebuilt without checking it, the noise will come back after the parts wear.So in conclusion I got a fully rebuilt tranny from the dealer, not the one in my car but a new one, and finnaly got rid of the noise. So do yourselves a favor and don't take any short cuts GET A MEW TRANNY FROM THE DEALER THEY DO IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME. By the whey, the dealer tranny comes with all bearings, clutch an preasure plates. Hope my F-UPS will help you out in any way.:p

RX7FC3S 01-09-02 09:43 AM

When you press the clutch in the throw out bearing gets pressed against the pressure plate to disengage the clutch and thats when it spins with the pressure plate and would make noise so if it were the throw out bearing it would actually make the noise when you press the clutch pedal in and stop making it when you engage the clutch.

Samps 01-09-02 10:41 AM

If it's the pilot bearing, would it make noise with the clutch pressed in?

I will buy a new tranny if that is the problem but I would like to rule out all other possibilities first.

DJChunter 01-09-02 09:07 PM

Hey samps told you it was the piloit bearing. No it dont make noise when the clutch is pressed in cuz its not being used in a sense. Think about it. Its no biggy so dont worry
Dave
