My car will start with any key and it will also start with out a key

does anybody know why my car starts without a key it was like this when i bought it and the car has never been hotwired i would like to know how to fix this because my driver door does not unlock from the outside so i dont want it stolen

Rotary101 08-14-05 08:23 PM

you can also pull the key out of the ignition when you turn it over

iceblue 08-14-05 08:29 PM

lol bad steering lock assembly. You can swap the unit from another car if you can get a key.

Rotary101 08-14-05 08:35 PM

yeah im kind of worried about it because i have some people in my school that would probably steal it from me so every time i do lock my driver door i have to unlock the passenger then unlock the driver door from the inside i also was able to turn the car over with a key from a 1995 s10

iceblue 08-14-05 08:37 PM

Short term. Wire a fuel pump cut off switch and hide it. They may steal it, but not get very far.

Rotary101 08-14-05 08:41 PM

the kid would steal it because he always challenges me to race with his stock civic and i always make fun of him and his car

your ignition is shot. just replacing the ignition cylinder should solve your problem.
same thing with a 1980 CJ7 Jeep i used to have, i never had to worry about keys though, lol.

iceblue - you don't even know what the fuck you talking about....there is a difference between the steering column lock and the ignition.

the column lock doesnt have a goddamn thing to do with any key being able to turn the tumblers in an ignition. the problem is a worn ignition!

do a little reading and figure out the difference between an ignition and the steering column lock

WTF did I say, its a unit you replace it. Pull the 2 pins out the top or cut the bracket off, its one unit.

hrmm... i have the exact same problem. when i start the car. i can take out the keys and the car will still be running. also, when i try to lock the driver side door. this is what happens. i open the door, manully push the lock down to lock the door, close the door, and then i can open the door back.

it only happens for the driver side tho. the passenger side is fine. so the only way i can lock the drivers side is open the passenger side, reach over to lock the drivers door, and then lock the passenger side.

when i try to unlock the car. i can only unlock it from the passenger side.... wierd...

SonicRaT 08-15-05 04:18 AM

Haha, you have to hold the door handle up when closing the door, otherwise it will unlock.
