Is my car supposed to rev to 3K when I start it?

Just got a 90 vert 5-speed. When I started it a few minutes ago it reved to 3k then dropped in about 10 seconds to 1.5k. Once i started backing out of the garage it was fine, but is it supposed to do that. My friend who has owned 3 RX7s said it was a "warm-up". Is it ok to drive it while it is still reved at 3k? Please advise the proud new RX7 owner.

yep it's supposed to. :)
It's for warming up the cats. You can just blip the throttle or put it in gear and it'll come down.

Scott 89t2 08-25-02 01:24 PM

yes it does. just start it in gear and it won't do it. I never let mine do it. can't be to good on a dead cold motor...

Barwick 08-25-02 03:07 PM

mine does it too.. I usually blip the throttle just as it starts up, and it never reaches 3k

Dubbz 08-25-02 05:59 PM

Mine duz the same thing, give it a bit of gas or put it in gear like the others have said. Usually it will do that for about 10 seconds then die down gradually.

On my TII, I disconnected the sensor at the bottom (driver's side) of the radiator, covered the connectors, and taped the wires up out of the way. That sensor is not used for anything else.

I saw on some site how to disable it. forgot where it was though, I've been looking for it myself. anyone have a link?

its normal... its the cold start routine...

put your car into a gear when u start it to avoid this.

zelgadiss-san 08-25-02 09:15 PM

the engine is designed to do that to warm up the engine before you actually drive the car. I don't see why people don't want the car to do it, and why people ask questions that could be answered by reading the owner's manual that comes with the car.

dr0x 08-25-02 09:47 PM

Because some people dont have the owners manual for a 11-15 year old car?

hawaiiangoat 08-25-02 09:49 PM

zelgadiss-san has a good point. Why drive your car cold and risk wrecking it when it only takes a few minutes for it to warm up. Common sense people, unless your looking for an excuse to blow your engine.

christi 08-26-02 01:13 AM

Hm, you guys say put the car into gear to aviod, yet my car does the same thing whether or not it's in gear or in netural.

zelgadiss-san 08-26-02 05:29 AM

a few MINUTES? it's only designed to do it for up to 20 seconds (again, in the OWNER'S MANUAL)

TurboSmoke 08-26-02 09:53 AM

let it do it..dont rev it when you start it to lower it. its lubing up the seals. also you might see some smoke dont worry though thats normal

Aaron Cake 08-26-02 12:21 PM

It has nothing to do with lubing the seals. The 3K startup is to light off the precats for cold start emissions purposes.

christi 08-26-02 01:28 PM

so... you should just let it sit at the 3k mark until it revs down? Usually mine will stay for like 3-5mins.. until it stops. I blip the throttle sometimes and it revs down to 1500, or dies on me.... like it has been doing. Esp. after it warms up a bit, I have to keep the trottle down a little, and the revs high so it won't die.

mcnannay 08-26-02 02:37 PM

sometimes it will rev excessively, dont worry about it, if you're gonna be driving it, its gonna warm up in a couple of minutes anyways, no big deal, and it dies because the car hasn't warmed up yet and the thing probably needs a tune up, once it gets goin you'll be fine, every car i have owned has done that (two mustangs, and two rx-7's)

TURB0 II 08-26-02 02:43 PM

mine does it too. just play it safe and let the car warm up. unless u do want a blown 13B one day

Aaron Cake 08-26-02 03:04 PM

To eliminate the 3K startup, disconnect the two wires at the drivers bottom of the rad, then jumper them together. This disables the cold start switch. Note that this switch is ONLY used for cold start, so doing this will not effect any other system.

What is supposed to happen on startup:
-start car, rev immediately to 3K
-sit at 3K for about 20 seconds
-drop down to 1.5K
-over the next few minutes (as the car warms up) slowly drop back down to 750K

Never drive the car before the 3K startup has completed. Normally, I let my car idle 1 minute in the morning after startup, then drive carefully until it reaches operating temperature. Keep it below 4K until the temp guage is in normal position (half for 89+ cars, 1/4 for 86-88 cars).

95R2-89TII Ground Zero 08-26-02 03:09 PM

Its the advanced idle to warm the catalytic converter up to operating temps sooner.

TurboSmoke 08-26-02 03:24 PM

i keep fouling my plugs i have not seen a cold start in 3 months :D i blew my clutch and i think i have a set of fryed coils my tac keeps falling to 0 but the car still is runnin. i wish i could get my car back that way. looks like it is time for a rebuild

dubulup 08-26-02 03:37 PM

of course it is
