my car is gay as hell.

I recently went to my mechanic for a little turboII talk. Conversation lead to me telling him to take my car for a spin cause it seems to be substantially slower than it was a week ago. So were on the streets and he is suprised to see the slowness of my car. He states that he won't know whats wrong untill he really checks it out considering I have replaced everything. So he says that were gonna go out and take his turboII for a spin. Well, I get in and it's crazy madness!!! This shit is really fast. I drive it and fall in love with its performance and ride qualtiy with 18' KONIG imagines. My car was never this fast when it was working properly and ride quality was never this good with my stock convertible wheels. What the hell could be restricting my car from being such a beast? I was really disapointed and haven't driven my car in a little over a day. What the hell is the problem?

787B 12-30-01 01:21 PM

does his car have a lot less miles on it?

Freeway 12-30-01 01:26 PM

not sure definately a hundred somthing. He rebuilt the motor but has the original turbo running. Why? What are you thinkin'?

Gefunk 12-30-01 01:40 PM

Um the thing to do is just get a new (professionally rebuilt) motor. Get a new TPS and take that mad shit packing out of the hood. I did this and mine is incredible. Well it doesn't help that the new motor was ported. I would also recommend replacing all hoses and belts. That is easy but time consuming so do it maticulously. Have fun ported engines for N/a's can easily equal 200 hp than it is all modification from there. Also try replacing the tranny, get a turbo II one and just click that mofo into place. Umm I think that is all.

787B 12-30-01 01:42 PM

im not sure i was just thinking maybe his engine isnt as worn out as yours. i suppose it could be a lot of things and without it getting checked it well it is hard to say. I am definitely not an expert but off the top of my head things that could be holding yours back is maybe the injectors, spark plugs, loss of compression. I really am not sure

Erik 12-30-01 04:06 PM

which mechanic was this??? it wasn't Ito was it?

take your car to JR Rotary in Paterson. Ito is the main guy there and he knows his shit...especially TurboII's.

Suparslinc 12-30-01 05:01 PM

ATF TRICK IT
HA HA HA
seriously, you didnt even say if the cars are mark IV/V or both the same, or any modifications.
Its hard to say what to do with such a general statement like "Its slow"

Freeway 12-31-01 12:22 AM

The engine is new from mazda with about 7K on it. The rebuilt upgrade turbo has about 4K on it. The ecu is brand new. Lots of other stuff too but it isn't modded. The guy I take it to knows his shit, I've known him for quite some time and has owned 1st, 2nd and 3rd gens. I'm thinking somethings wrong with how it was all put together. Before I found a steady mechanic a lot of diffrent mechanics had there hands on it. The parts are all good, something is just not right. I live in south jersey and have no idea where patterson is.

Freeway 12-31-01 12:23 AM

oh, it's an 87' TII.

rxrotary2_7 12-31-01 10:02 AM

first of all, your car is not gay. i would have opted for a different color myself, but your wing is nice.
freeway, your mechanics car is my old one. you may not know me, but i know you. the car had about 78k on it when i gave it to him last year. it is a 87/88 turbo II. one thing i can tell you is that jims car has 94 rotors in it, it has been ported, it has an IC biger than most cars radiators, 3in exhaust all the way through, msd ignition, and a fd fuel pump. this will run better than a stock turbo II anyday.
i am glad you realized that too many people had their hands on your car. many of which had no clue as to what they were doing. i remember at one point,( i think it was you) that called jim, told him that you took your car to this "other guy" and the car was running wen you brought it in, and it didnt start and now has to be towed out of the shop, and you claimed it was jims fault, because he put in your motor.
i remember when your new motor was going in, that your car was one big rats nest of wires. jim had to also use an ecu of mine to make sure your ecu was bad. just take your car to the same person always, they know your car, and you wont get screwed around. jim is great, but if you want to go all the way up to ito, go ahead, bu be consistant whith where you go. "to many cooks spoil the stew"
if i am freaking you out about who i am, i will give you a hint.
i have a fd that is red, or you may know me from my black fc, or maybe from my rx2.

Freeway 01-01-02 01:33 PM

Do you live in Magnolia? Thats the only red FD I have seen around here unless you are the guy that lives near Broodmore West. Well, I know he has the 3" exhaust and fmic but he was trying to tell me that he doesn't know why my car is gay and that his car is basically stock. I'm gonna kick him in the nuts next time I see him..jk. My car has gotten even more gay since I first posted. I have severe power loss and a loud wooshing sound which sounds like its comming from the DP. Must be a leak or something but I dont believe that would cause the power loss unless the bolts from the manifold to the turbo are loose and I'm loosing pressure from that. Not sure but I'm taking it to Jim's tomorrow so he can make sense of all this. What I'm really trying to do is get an FD but my FC has to be reliable first.

Do you know your shit when it comes to TII's? You might wanna swing by here if you have the time and tell me what you think. I'd ask jim to stop by some time but he's always at the shop when I'm home. I try and fix as much as I can but I'm still learning. I'd rather spend the time knowing an FD inside and out.

Oh yeah, that was me. I took it to Jafstrem and they fucked me all up. I drove it in and had it towed out. What a bunch of dicks!

Did you just get that FD when you sold your TII?

rxrotary2_7 01-01-02 08:46 PM

yeah, the fd you see in magnolia is mine. i do not live there though. my girl does. i am always up at jims shop, he is one of my good friends. i got this fd about 3 years ago. i had another one before this one. it was blue, i had that for abot 3 years before it got stolen. the turbo II i bought just for the hell of it. i have alwas had an rx7 though. and i drive a 90 for my daily driver. i dont have time to go up there, but jim will help you out. one thing i know about turboII's that always causes a problem is the double butterfly plate in the throtlebody. it is activated via collant temp which can sometimes clog up and cause severe loss of power. you may want to look into that if you havent already. other tha that, just be patient with it. i had a problem with my fd that took me 6 months to figure it out. it is always worth it in the end, and one it is fixed, you forget all about the time it was "down".

RevinRx7 01-01-02 11:28 PM

Try replacing your exhaust manifold to turbo gasket. Thats what was wrong with my friends TII. thing runs so good now that he did that. my god i couldn't even keep with the kid

Freeway 01-02-02 12:55 PM

I'm taking it today. I keep you guys posted.

rxrotary2_7 01-03-02 02:31 PM

i was up there today. your cats are cloged. the wooshing sound you describe is most likely the cats being so cloged the air exhaust has to find another way out which was through your gaskets. it is amazing your car even starts.

Freeway 01-03-02 08:13 PM

I went up there today too, must have missed ya. There was a guy there with a red convertible not sure who he was thought, never saw him before. I just stopped up there briefly to grab my registration forms and he told me the same thing. I was pretty pissed when I saw it on the lift with all that welding and white goo all over my shit. The guy from bargan brakes and muff did this. He welded the cats together. And after that he was trying to get me to cut the flanges off my DP and weld it up. I finally bought the pod for my boost guage so Jim's gonna do that up too. Hope I get it back soon. I am trapped in the house.

Oh by the way, doesn't that mean something is leaking in the exhaust and clogging the cats? Like oil or gas or somthin'?

vosko 01-03-02 09:01 PM

cats wear out over time and the crap inside them doesn't let air go past. they will also glow bright red when this happens ;)

rxrotary2_7 01-04-02 01:09 AM

basicaly what vosko said...
btw...whats up vosko, havent talked to you in a while. happy new year! get the fd back yet?
and i know your cars motor blew before. i dont know why but in both my fd's when i blew a motor, right after that, the cats went. i dont know if thats just a coincidence, or if when the motor blew, some debris gets cloged in there, or that shit gets spewed all over and "cooks" itself onto an already deteriorating part. who knows....just replace eveything and stop calling an rx gay. it will run great eventualy. just dont go to pep boys and every other many moe and jack in the area! LOL:D

RXlexi 01-04-02 01:21 AM

Hey RXrotary2_7, about that butterfly plate : in my '89 TII the power is great the first 2-3 times I floor it after startup. After this, the turbo seems like it just doesnt want to blow, so I see power loss. The engine still feels strong, just much less boost. I do have a small coolant leak in the top of my radiator, but could the heat of the coolant be causing this power loss? I also have an intake with no cold air box, so maybe it breaths in warm air, causing so little boost? Thanks for any help...

i dont think your butterflies would have anything to do with that. what they are there for is to not allow you to boost the car up while it is still cold if that makes any sense to you. i had a smiliar type of problem with a fd like you are describing, except my ignition would break up unde WOT and after abou 4k rpm's once the car warmed up. turned out to be the ecu was reading that my car was running EXTREMELY hot and it would hit fuel cut and theignition would shut off. maybe you have a similiar problem. but i dont think a leak in coolant would cause this. the reason with the butterflies is that they never open, not that they get stuck shut. it is due to the coolant beig dirty and stuff from not being flushed....if you understand what im saying. hope that helped. i doubt it did, but hey, what do you want from me. i am not getting paid for this.

Freeway 01-12-02 11:56 AM

Got my car back thursday. I have 2 1/2 all the way back. It's not gay anymore. Straightened her out real quick. It feels much more solid now and is noticably faster that when she was running good. I can't wait to eat somebody.

i'll take ya on!

btw....i would take your old cats back to the muffler shop that did that, and ask them if this "is what you consider an expert mufler job"?. that or just toss thoes cats through their storefront window. that was sickning the job they did. :puke: it really was.

Freeway 01-14-02 12:57 AM

Ahhh... I need to ask you if you know of the place were I can get that fuel cut defender like the one Jim has. I saw it on the web a while ago and then I recognized the one he had at the shop. I can't find it anymore. It's a lil' black box with two harness adapters.

Ignore that advice. I am who he's talking about and the manifold was not replaced. Only the gasket, and that was just for noise reasons, It was not yet a performance issue.
