my attempt of iron porting!!! pics inside
ok to start, this waz a bad iron, so all the slipping i did dident matter, the goal waz a 6 to 4 port large street port, now if this waz really gonna go on my engine i would have cleared out the divider more but its not going inn no worries...
lemme know what u think of it Before http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...8/DSC02638.jpg AFTER http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...8/DSC02640.jpg |
hehe..... a couple of "runaway bits" marks.

if you port a six port you should leave a little 1/4" bridge between the two ports, its way eaiser on the side seals and dosent make any hp difference. other than that just keep practicing and work on being steady, take your time and your porting skills will improve.
|
Next time, use a template or at least draw on your port with a marker or dye. NEVER port in towards the oil rings riding surface, which is clearly visible about 1/16" from the inside edge of the port. Also, lay down a couple of layers of thick duct tape right up against the edge of your port template marks so that any slip will cause minimal damage.
Im not sure what technique you used, but it's helpful to steady yourself and the tool using the side/palm of one of your hands on the iron itself and then use your fingers on that hand plus the other hand to hold and move the tool. Looks like you were perhaps doing it freehand or not stabilizing yourself against the iron. |
i had the port outlined with a marker, but wiped it off before i took the pic...

Did you just come up with your own template or guide, or did you buy one? If you bought one, from whom?

Porting "practice" is useless if you practice wrong techniques. :) All newbie porters should start with a dead set of irons and templates from a reputable source (Mazdatrix, RB, Ito, etc.). I think they should first make their practice ports and post the pictures. Then, once they have received feedback, port at least one hole to destruction. Purposely port into the water jacket. That will quickly teach you where the limits are, and how to recognize them. |
