is my 7 a gtu or gxl

Just got a new 7 yesterday and wondering if its a GTU or GXL, or a GL? Cant really tell only main difference in respect to my other 7 is the cluster red lines at 8k rpms or 8.5k rpms. Also has a lsd so what model is it? I cannot find anything anywhere. I tried the FAQ and only tells me wether the vehicle is certain year or series based on VIN. So can anyone help me out? Coz Im tearing the car apart and trying to figure out what to throw in my 7 and what to leave alone. Thanx

If it has a button in the center console that says "normal" and "sport" then it's a GXL... Also check the strut towers if it has the stock suspension... The GXL will have wires going into them...

There is a sticky thread at the top of this, the 2nd gen technical section that list the Standard Features and Options.

Should be pretty easy to tell based on that.

Please read the sticky threads before posting.

If you had, you would have seen that GXL models have power windows while GTU models do not.

And you need to list the year as well for anyone to actually help you.

Not all GTU models were manual windows... In fact I've only seen a few that weren't power...

How many of them were manual? I've been looking for GTUs door panels but if GTU's were manual then it may be easier to find a pair... :)

No you are wrong.

No such thing as a stock GTU with power windows.

The only GTU models with power windows are ones that someone has swapped in power windows.

Unless you don't know the difference between a GTU and GXL (which sounds to be the case).

Please read the Standard features and options thread found at the top of this, the 2nd gen RX-7 technical section before posting.

Well the GTU is the only model I've never personally owned, so I can't exactly vouch from experience, but I almost bought a 42k mile all stock '90 GTU from a dealership once... It had power windows... Doesn't seem like someone would swap on such a low mileage vehicle... I'm probably wrong in either case, but it seems odd...

If it had power windows..well, it was a 90 GXL.

Remember the S5 models all had 5 lug wheels and the non turbo coupes all had the same wheels, yet the 89-90 GTU was the base strippy model, simular to the 87.5-88 SE model or the 86-87 Luxury coupe.

But lets look logically at it as well.. if the GTU came with power windows it would be no different than a GXL..On the S5 models the only difference would have been the AAS and 4 piston front brakes on the GXL if both the GXL and GTU had power windows.

And power windows goes against anything the GTU (even the lame S5 ones) were created for. GTU= sporty and light, GXL= Luxury and soft.

13b4me 03-28-06 03:48 PM

Well it didn't have 4-piston brakes, and it had GTU stickers on the fenders... It's alot more feasible I guess, that they would have swapped power windows IN, than to swap the TII brakes OUT... :dunno:

Sorry I read and read and it didnt help But idle q's too

Thanx for the quick replies. I read the FAQ and figured there would be other miniscule details that would distinguish the models. Ok the car is a production Year 1989 so I take it that its a 90. It has no electronic suspension. It does have power steering and power mirrors, and cruise. 5 lug wheels, LSD, and the stock wing (duno if that makes a diff).

Also just so that this post dont go to waste on my ignorance to 7's, the car runs (quite well kinda) but idles at around 2k - 2.5k rpms. Car has not been ran over 2 years can anyone inform me on why this would happen? The car was warmed up and ran for about a good 25 minutes at 60 mph. Once parked it still stuck at 2k+ rpms. Any ideas?

Try adjusting the TPS, checking for vac leaks, and making sure your throttle cable moves freely (do that first)...

Does it have 4-piston brakes? What about power windows?

All S5 models had power steering, power mirrors, 5 lug wheels and a stock wing.

But if it really has a LSD (which I am skeptical) then you have a GTUs model (note the small "S". The GTUs is considered the most desirable S5 model and was the neutered boy racer of the S5 models (it was orginally slated to have a non turbo 20B engine in pre-production- instead they neutered it by swapped in a higher rear end ratio and put the standard 13B in).

Idle is radically high, and should be at/around 650-700 RPM when warm. Idle that high is either someone trying to hide a problem or a tuning issue (improper idle or timing setting, etc) or a stuck throttle or CC cable.

tdawg88 03-28-06 04:04 PM

It does have 4 piston Brakes, but no power windows.

How to adjust tps? I was reading my shop manual and trying to figure it out. Thanx though.

I dont know if its imporperly tuned. the engine looks stock to me but it just idles high all the time. Anyhow I just want to know what I can take off this 7 before dumping it. Thanx

That's what I was thinking... I doubt it's a '90 GTUs though in any case, so if the production date is before (6/89 or 7/89? can't remember) then it's an '89...

13b4me 03-28-06 04:10 PM

Sounds like a GTUs model to me... Pretty highly sought after model...

You don't want to take anything off the engine before "dumping it".

If it is a GTUs, it is worth more stock than modfied by true RX-7 enthusists.

And removing any of the common removal items (like the air pump) will actually result in lower HP and power.

Really? Daym... how can I be sure in fact? Coz what caught my attention was the red line is 8k rpms. I have an n/a and my redline is 7k rpms. So whats up with that? Well I appreciate all your guy's input and opinions. Its too bad I have to dump this car once im done taking parts off it. I'll let yall know if I can part out anything worth your time as thanx. Unless DMV lets me register it. Thanks lots

And being in the state of emissions nazi's it would be best to troubleshoot and repair the emissions system, rather than removing any of it... Leave it stock... If you want to modify a 7, just sell that to a collector or enthusiast, and buy a TII or something... :)

13b4me 03-28-06 04:21 PM

All S5 N/A's redline at 8k...

13b4me 03-28-06 04:22 PM

Oh and if it is in fact a GTUs, I'll take the rear end... Shoot me a PM! :D

where is the car at???

tdawg88 03-28-06 06:14 PM

I called Mazda they said (in respects to the VIN I gave em) its a "GU2P" with a Normal Open Diff. I dont know if that matters, but yeah he could not find out wether it was a gxl, gsl, or gtu or what not. So does anyone know what that reference refers to? Thanx, anyways considering its not what was thought of sorry 13b4me but ill keep you posted if you still interested. Car is in SJC Cali

13b4me 03-28-06 06:16 PM

GU2P is a GTU... The only S5's with open diffs were 89-90 GTU's, 91 N/A coupe's, and 89-91 Vert's...

tdawg88 03-28-06 07:51 PM

So its a GTU or GTU's? just curious also about the 2500 rpm idle, I was told that it is a vaccuum leak. He dont speak good english at all so i thought id ask here. Any ideas where exactly I could look? thanx

Icemark 03-28-06 07:55 PM

Sounds like either a tweaked GTU, or a real GTUs.

Is there a reason you are thinking about parting it out???

If it just because you think you won't pass emissions or have an extrodinarly high idle, well that is hardly a reason to part the car.

I would even consider buying it if you just where gonna part it or something.

13b4me 03-28-06 08:20 PM

If it's a real S I got dibs on the rearend (assuming Mark doesn't buy the whole car)...
