MSD on a rebuild

This is probably a dumbass question but can putting a msd on a fresh rebuild have any negative effects? I am just kinda paranoid over my investment.

ajsuper7 02-21-05 02:56 PM

It shouldn't, but if your worried just wait until its broken in to wire it up. However it will help with starting (cold and hot) but the only hp gains are up top in the rev range atleast thats the only place i noticed any difference. it may have helped the low end but it's been so long since i've driven my coupe i dont remeber.

SonicRaT 02-21-05 03:05 PM

No, it won't. It'll provide a minor benefit in helping start when it's a bit flooded (common on rebuilds with low compression). You'll be fine.

Thanks alot.

what the hell does the MSD thing do anyways!

C-Murder 02-21-05 04:37 PM

Actually its a smaller hotter spark that repeats quickly. MSD=multiple spark discharge.

Which Msd system do you have?? I have a Msd 6a system under my bed right now with the 8k rpm rev limiter.

I have a 6a also but no rev limiter i know of. I got it off ebay really cheap and its just the red msd box, part number 6200.

SonicRaT 02-21-05 08:05 PM

The MSD 6AL was the one with the limiter. Same unit tho other than that.

Project84 02-21-05 08:10 PM

You guys using the stock coil with the MSD ignitor or do you use the MSD coils too?

RotaryEvolution 02-21-05 08:12 PM

who needs a rev limiter on a FC anyways?

Who would want one? And im using the stock coils cause i have been told by many people that msd coils are crap.

SonicRaT 02-21-05 08:24 PM

stock coils are fine, can use bosch though if you want.

Project84 02-21-05 08:24 PM

wow, thats the first I've heard about there coils. What specifically is crap about them?

RotaryEvolution 02-21-05 08:25 PM

well most people want to push higher RPMs than stock with the rotary but the problem is the ECU cannot process much higher than mid 7Ks on the S4 and spark starts the break up in that range as well. upgrading to standalone and upgrading the coils or adding on MSD boxes is what most people do to cheat the stock management systems.

C-Murder 02-21-05 08:37 PM

How much do they go for on ebay?

SonicRaT 02-21-05 08:38 PM

around $100 last time i checked.
