motor sensor question

I bought a 91 Turbo with a blown motor. So I got another motor and it was setup for a carb instead. I am switching that motor to run on electronics like the original motor was in it. Anyway to the question...

On the side of the old motor where the leading and trailing plugs are there was a bung above them with a one wire sensor installed. The motor I bought thats got the carb setup does not have the bungs for these sensors. Does anyone know what they are for and if I need them?

Thanks

huh huh huh.... he said BUNG!!! huh huh huh.....

Maybe the oil pressure sending unit? not much else on that side. Look on your old block for a round thingy with a place to hook on a wire connector on a nipple watchamacallit dooma-flatchey. Just don't tee-off the whoossa-malachi or the everlasting goo-stopper.

That is the knock sensor. It's purpose is to send a signal to the control unit when detonation is occuring. The control unit retards spark timing to help reduce the detonation.

Will it be possible to operate the car without this piece in the electronics? Since its just a knock sensor if its not hooked up will the enigine light just click on and ill still be able to drive still or is it more complicated then that?
Thanks

Detonation is not your friend, especially on a rotary. Not having the knock sensor should not turn on the check engine light, but you won't have the protection against detonation (knock).

Well this motor cost a penny to get and I really dont want to drop more on another motor just to fix this problem. Is there anything else I can do to get the knock sensor back or if I drive like a normal human should I be ok?

YOu guys assume that the knock system is even working, which 9 times out of 10 it isnt.

With this said that means I should be ok then right? Is it a common part to fail and most people just dont realize this?

Why would the motor I bought not have the bung for the knock sensor?
