motor boggs when accelerated
Ok, it just started happening this morning.. i can only hit the throttle a tad bit, if i floor it it boggs out and loses all power, it will rev high if i only put the pedal in a little bit, but if i try to put it in a lot all power is gone, if i hold it, the car shuts off.. whats the deal???
|
What model do you have ? does it idle o.k and have you been doing any work on it before this started to happen ?
|
1990 gxl, it idles fine, and no work before is started doing this
|
i would first check your AFM... mine would idle when i had a bad one but just bog after hitting the gas... does the car go thru most of the rpm range when you get on the gas EXTREMELY slowly? randomly die if you back up at idle speed? and have huge hiccups? if so then def check the AFM it could be bad and your car is starving from no air.... also when it drops off it just feels like you hit a brick wall right? good luck

It is your solenoid resister located under your airbox. replace it and your car will run fine
|
where do i get that and how much does it cost?
and what is the "AFM"? |
AFM is an air flow meter it goes right after the air filter..

i just picked one up at the junkyard, and i just noticed this was an s5 i thought it was an s4. The resistor is different in the s5,its mounted in front of the air box,its a silver box
The Afm is the air flow meter measures the volume and tempature of the air coming into the engine its attached to the airbox |
well, my friend has a k&n filter and mass airflow sencer for 100 bucks, in like new condition he pulled from an rx7 at the junkyard think this will do the trick?
|
zatonic where in florida are you located?
TwEaK |
tampa area
|
if its not for an S4
|
I'll second CWSTTU. The car is bogging because its toooooooo rich. The afm is not doing its job right. I think you could get a afm for less than what you quote though. Fifty seems on the high side.
|
yea, but this is also comes with a k&n filter... stil dont think its worth it?
how can i tell if its for an s4 or not? |

The solenoid resistor, on a series four, adds about six ohmns to the circuit for each fuel injector. A series five has no such because it uses fuel injectors with a built in resistance equal to the solenoid resistor On a series five, the resistor located in front of the the afm, is the fuel pump resistor relay assy which serves a total different function than the solenoid resistor on a series four. If the new afm fixes your problem, I'd be interested in buying your old afm for twenty bucks including shipping. |
ok, where would I get a new afm? and how much? maybe like autozone or somthing? Im still thinkin I should get this K&N filter because the one I have now is a cheapo, and u have to replace it.. with K&N u can clean, plus it has the "mass airflow censor" what should I do here guys, give me your opinion.. the k&N stuff he has he said on the site it adds up to over 300 or somthin.. dono let me know whats up

hey guys.. yea, thats what my seven has been doing too.. i thought my car was just old and high mileage but is it the afm.?? mine has just about 200,xxx (currently 199,8xx) it does the same thing as zatonic.. mine's an 90 gtu..
is the silver like box right in front of the air box.? where the afm is located.? and my enigne light comes on at flooring the car.. engine check says that its error number 13.. which is the intake system too.. i guess its cause of a loose or broken wire as it had said.. (engine trouble shoot table) but do you guys think its the afm also.? thanks 1990_whitecomet |
No.13 is for the pressure sensor. It's near the left strut tower. Has one vac hose and one electrical connector going to it.
On a 90 the fuel pump resistor relay is the thing located in front of the afm. Not code 13 related. |
i bought my new afm from a guy on the board for 25$ plus shipping.... it was 1987rx7guy.. pm him and see if he has another one for sale hes a good guy

Whoa fuel pump resistor relay? what would this do if it was bad? would it cause "cut outs" in fuel delivery at certain rpms?
|
I know that there has been a lot of talk about the AFM, however, you may want to check your TPS. It sounds to me like your long range part of the TPS may have gotten fried. I know that they die more than a lot of other things under the hood. If you have a multimeter, you can check the resistance at closed throttle and full throttle. The FSM (factory service manual) tells you what they should be. It would be cheaper to replace the TPS too, so you might want to check that before buying an AFM.

There are folk out there, I'm sure, who are driving about with quite a bit less than 12v under full boost/throttle. Nope. I can't prove that. Just a thought. |
I had EXACTLY the same problem on my s4 and the solenoid resistor was the problem.
|
can someone post a picture of the solieniod? The hayne smentions it but doesn't show a picture.....
|
haynes manual page 123 bottom its a pic of a turbo but you can still see it in front of the airbox
