Not sure on the others but all verts have an Alum hood.

Stanello 02-28-05 11:30 PM

My 87.5 sport has a Aluminum hood. I think all sports do.

Crazyt 02-28-05 11:54 PM

My '86 base has one.

Summary: It's all fuquered up.

Icemark 03-01-05 12:07 AM

Alum hoods were only standard on Verts and the 89-90 GTUs.

They were commonly found on 86 models with auto trannys or 4 seats (for weight reasons), and most turbos (but not all). They also were randomly found on some Sports, and 88 GTU models but with no rhyme or reason.

nope, my '87 sport had a steel hood... so I found an aluminum N/A hood from a 'vert... for $28 !

specRX7_22 03-05-05 12:51 PM

is there any markings on them to justify them steel or aluminum?? or do you just bring a magnet along lol

If it's heavy, it's probably steel, if it's light, it's probably aluminum. Believe me there is a NOTICEABLE difference in weight, I would know since I have steel :(

Magnet will confirm it if you're unsure.

Also on all base model S4s.

Using a magnet is a quick way to find out ;)

No, only on base models with either 4 seats, or auto trannies.

90% of the base models I have seen do not have them.

Natey 03-05-05 01:54 PM

My 87se with 2+2 has a steel one.
My '91 coupe has an aluminum one.

The hood latch rod will be riveted to the hood on aluminum ones.

my base auto did not have a aluminum hood. but its also only a 2 seater. so i gess the 2+2 autos came with a aluminum hood

Late in the 86 Model run, Mazda had problems with suppliers as they were building considerably more 86 FCs than they expected. There were a couple hood issues, were they didn't always follow what they were spec'd too.

eyeoutthere 03-05-05 02:26 PM

My 86 (base, 5-speed, 2-seats, zero options) has an AL hood.

vipers 03-05-05 02:45 PM

lol......im sure that some cars slipped through the books w/ the wrong hood in place....

TOOSHORT_88 03-05-05 09:46 PM

my 88 se has steel and my 88 vert has alluminum, it was just an option to have ..

shotty 03-05-05 10:18 PM

First time I opened the hood on my GTUs I was like WTF that's too heavy to be aluminum. Quick check with a magnet proved me wrong though.

SonicRaT 03-05-05 10:22 PM

Haha, have you ever had to lift the steel hoods? Let alone try to move them on your own?

rwd 03-06-05 02:09 AM

so whats the official answer?

Juan 03-06-05 02:20 AM

The official answer is: There is no official answer.

mudbone 03-06-05 09:38 AM
