Mixture Screw?

:) Tried the search but no luck....

87 NA equipped with a lead from the computer to what appears to be a rheostat that can be adjusted with a straight blade screwdriver. This screw is marked with "R" in one direction and "L" in the other. It will only turn approx. 1/2 turn.

The Haynes manual mentions it, but does not explain its function.

Could it be a fuel adjustment of some sort (assuming "R" is rich and "L" is lean), or could it stand for rowdy and lazy, or what ?

I'm so new, I don't have a clue.

Yeah, It stands for RICH or LEAN. I have never messed with it though

This screw is used to set up your idle mix. It has no effect once you open the throttle. To set it, you must jumper the idle set connector (the 2-wire green connector near the leading coil), set your idle to 750 rpm (warm engine), and adjust the screw for highest rpm. That is the one and only time you should mess with the idle mix screw, as a matter of fact you are supposed to lock it with nail polish or some such thing after you finish.

idle mixture screw

My idle was up a little bit w/ TB screw tightened all the way, and i was told to try and play with that screw to fix it. I let your know as soon as i put my car back together.

nice that rhymes :)

do NOT mess with that screw, unless if have an unadjusted spare.

chances are you'll get lousy gas mileage (I kept getting 100 miles per tank) until I replaced it with another one. The mechanic never marked the original position and my mileage went down from 260 miles per tank. Talk about running rich !!

so thats why the screw was like glued in there. Good thing i haven't touched it yet. ever since i took off my ac&cv my idle rose 200rpms. And there is no vacuum leak, blocked off and put rtv in there.
