maaaaaaaaaaybe your spark plugs/wires.

I recently had the same problem, after all the jerking and backfiring my tach would die. You should check your spark plugs and wires to make sure all is well. In the end my problem was the trailing coils taking a dump. Hope you figure it out.

First start with a full tuneup paying particular attention to the plugs and wires. Replace both. But also do the fuel filter and everything specified in the 60K tuneup.

If you are still having issues, you will need to make sure that you are getting consistant spark at all plugs. You can do this with a spark tester but it is difficult while driving.

Another thing to check are the injector connections. They bake over time in engine bay heat and can often become intermittant.

Past that some more troubleshooting may be necessary like scoping the ignition and CAS signals.

This is of course assuming that it's not something simple like an intermittant TPS signal.
