Mileage fraud
 

So the other day I was working on my car, basically turning it into a racecar and I took out the dash. So I noticed that the dash has obviously been out before. I’ve noticed some one has taken of some interior panels off before, but there was an after-market stereo installed in the past so I didn’t think much of it. A lot of the tabs under the dash were broken and I found an electrical connector that was broken off completely (I don’t know where it goes!) So I’m thinking that my car might have had some mileage fraud, but it’s a hard call. The car is in great shape; everything mechanical works flawlessly even the AAS suspension, the interior is super clean too. I changed the water pump around 55,000 miles and that’s the only maintenance it’s ever needed. I know these cars are easy to fraud because of the mechanical speedometer. I was thinking that someone took out the instrument cluster to roll back the miles, but wont that break the speedo? I hear the needle breaks if you try to roll it back. And why go though all that trouble of taking off the dash when you can just take the cable off the trans? What do you guys think?

done it....... and works fine......... the reason i did it was because i did a turbo swap, and i used the cluster from the turbo car, but it had like 220,000 miles on it...... mine had 115,000..... big difference...... so i rolled the mileage back to my exact mileage of my car....... so i think what i did is still legal! not sure though....i wasnt trying to fool anyone by making my car have less miles or anything..

There are two odometers in the speedos, one that you can see, the other that is part of the 20K miles switch inside the speedo.

So do they both match???

There's no reason for them to take the dash off to change the odometer. In fact, the instrument cluster must come out to remove the dash anyway, so doing so would be kind of pointless. Probably pulled the dash to look at a heating problem, which was likely eventually traced back to the logicon/air mix motor.

It's fairly easy to tell if someone has taken the instrument cluster apart as the screws have orange paint on them from the factory. Any damage to the paint indicates the cluster has been disassembled.

note....is what i did illegal??? or is it ok to do that??

mark im not sure if you would know, but my odometer is stuck at 50,000 miles and it will only operate the 100, 10's and 1's digit but not the 1,000 or 10,000 digit, if i looked on the rear odometer would i know the actual mileage then?
