miata tranny: done research need advice

i have an 88 T2 thats getting a 13bre in it (only wanna push 280-300) and i happend to grab a 92 miata tranny.....i hear the 92 syncros arent as good as the 94 syncros...thus now im pretty upset....does anyone know where to point me to so i can get some syncros or a 94 tranny and EVEN MORE information than 87rx7girls thread about the NA-miata tranny gear swap? thanks i already know what it entails but if anyone has tossed a 92 in their cars plz let me know? thanks!

wouldnt a mx5 tranny be worse in a turboed car? the turbo wouldnt have enough time to spool up to make it worth it. that is why the turbo2 tranny is geared longer than the na's

Turbo II-FB 01-15-06 12:35 PM

the tranny would break pretty quick under those power loads

Ask RX-7girl, she has a Miata box in her GTU. Even though she's in Japan right now. Should be back in 2 weeks.

My dad has a 92 miata that has around 220rwhp (maybe around 260 at the crank)on the original tranny and it's fine. The synchros are good and all, but they are fragile at higher hp levels (like what you're shooting for), especially if you're planning on drag racing at all. If you want lower gearing you can just do a 4.33:1 ring and pinion swap.

hmmm well someone said those gears wont fit into the T2 tranny does anyone know if this is correct?

Why not just use the beefier T2 transmission?

--MAstermind-- 01-16-06 10:13 AM

well its more about i wanted shorter gear ratios not really about beef as in peppyness my plan was to keep FC first and swapp out 2-5th gears...to have a quick ratio and then change to a 4.3 final drive....but im still stuck on wheather those miata gears will fit my T2 tranny!

I wouldn't bother honestly. And a 4.3 final drive? I think you need to make more power with the car instead of trying to shorten up the gears. It'll cost less in most cases :).

--MAstermind-- 01-16-06 04:52 PM

well more background on the car we are dropping a 13B-RE and a haltec....along with obvious fuel mods im not too worried about power...

we are going to be thorowing in a 9.5/10lb flywheel and aluminum drive shaft...

now i was wondering since people can toss in the T2 trannies in the NA could i do an NA miata swaped tranny in my T2?

my initial goal was to get amazing response and quick revs i dont need a high high speed thus about 152 is acually high enough IMO...

now in regards to the longevity of the miata gears i would have them cryotreated as that should be able to have them hold up a little more....

im just looking at other possiblities and angles i could possibly approach thanks for everyones input!

misterstyx69 01-16-06 05:42 PM

did anyone actually read RX7Girl's thread?..It's for an N/A..and not for a TII ..it would make too much power and kill the Transmission..the gear ratio was different and for what she "needed" the Miata gears were suited for this application..I think she explained it in great detail..

Edit, you beat me to it.

yea the miata tranny cant take the punishment but now the REPU tranny and the b2000 and the b2600 tranny's will bolt right up and can handle about 350 400 hp

--MAstermind-- 01-17-06 08:07 AM

ok yea i read it, and my POINT was to get shorter gears into my turbo...hence y i am ASKING questions because the NA-. miata swapp has been done...so i wouldnt need to ask...

what are the gears ratios of those trannys? didint the 2600 have TII type trannies in them??

thanks for the input!

Black91n/a 01-17-06 02:31 PM

I don't know if you're able to pick and choose what gears to use. I know that you should be able to pick any 5th you want from the Miata or the NA FC, but as for a 1st, I don't know, it may not be possible to pick and choose. The Miata 1st is actually even higher than any FC first gear. If it's a daily driver having a taller 5th would be better for fuel economy. I suppose you could do a NA tranny swap if you change all the things that the NA guys change to put a TII tranny in their cars. I don't see why this wouldn't work.

KingCobraV9 01-17-06 03:31 PM

i thought all that number stuff ment it was a longer geared trans in the turbo 2 that the na. i dunno like a said before i thought the turbo 2 was longet to allow more spool time

Ratios Manual Automatic
3.14
1.89
1.33
1.00
0.81

-----------------------miata above-------
fc below
-------------------
1986-91 5-speed/13B
3.48,36;
2.00,63;
1.37,92;
1.00,125;
0.70,128

it is different for my 87 n/a

so those of you who say the ratio isnt different. it clearly is. 87 fc .vs. 92 mx-5
