MBC in glove box....

so im thinkin... i dont want to be pulling over every other 10 seconds to adjust this (having it the engine bay)and dont want it visible inside the car and thought ...what about the glove box? anyone else put there MBC in there?? i have a mount ill use and use metal on the other side to reinforce it and not have to worry about breaking the plastic where its mounted.....
whats the easiest way to turn boost up with a SAFCII and wideband... do you just crank the fuel up to like 20's or 30's get the boost where you want it then tune the safc afterwards?

-efini- 02-25-06 01:28 PM

its safest to go pig rich then tune from there. what kinda injectors you have?

88rxn/a 02-25-06 01:30 PM

550 primaries 720 secondairies

The MBC is your photo is designed to be mounted in the cabin. I wouldn't put it in the glovebox though, I'd put it under the dash where you can reach it while driving, and passengers can't.

88rxn/a 02-25-06 05:24 PM

my point exactly...locked glove box = only i could get access to it...i thought about mounting it underneath but figured id be hitting it with my knee or somethin..

NZConvertible 02-25-06 05:35 PM

I never lock my glove box. If anyone breaks in, they're welcome to take what's in there. If they find it locked they're figure there's something in there worth having. They will use tools to lever it open it, and then I'll need to replace the whole dashboard along with a bunch of burnt CD's and a road map...

I'd just place it where you can reach it. It'll make setting it a lot easier.

I was plannin on putting mine in the center console. you know,m inside the storage under the armrest.

88rxn/a 02-25-06 06:11 PM

not bad^^..... i still think im going with the glove box....its crazy to adjust it yourself at full boost anyways...NZ had a good point with the thieves but im just convinced it is a bitch to have it in the way underneath the dash somewhere...maybe someone will post a pic. or 2 showing a decent spot to change my mind....im ony 5'9" and im thinkin it would get hit by my knee..i couldnt imagine taller people..

BklynRX7 02-25-06 06:15 PM

I dunno if you smoke but what about in the ash tray, unless you have your safc there. Thats where my SAFC is goin.

I never suggested that, I just meant it could be easily reached any time while driving. IMO having to reach over and open the glove box to adjust it is inconvenient and also a little unsafe. I'm taller than you are and there's no way my knees would be anywhere near hitting that knob if it was fitted under the dash on either side of the steering column.

Stick it wherever you like best, but I suggest sitting in the car and placing it in a few spots first, to see what fits and what's easy to reach. :)

The thing about mounting a mbc inside the cabin is you need long boost lines to reach it. That means you will be loosing a little boost response. If you still want it in easy reach be sure to keep the lines as short as you can and use the smallest diameter line that gets the job done.

NZConvertible 02-25-06 07:15 PM

You won't be losing boost response, you will actually be gaining it. with a MBC the longer the lines are, the longer it takes to fully pressurise them, so the wastegate's opening is delayed slightly. This actually brings boost up faster.

You're right, but you got the boost part backwards. :)
The boost will tend to spike with long lengths of hose into the interior.
This is why I hate those things; save your money and get an EBC!
If you're going to run an MBC, keep the hose lengths as short as possible - which means keeping it under the hood. :(

That'll depend on the engine/turbo combination. This graph shows the WOT boost response of a 3.0L turbo six.

http://us1.webpublications.com.au/st...0/1053_6mg.jpg

The blue line is stock, the red line is with the wasegate actuator disconnected, the yellow line is with a 2.5m (~8") long wastegate hose and the green line is with a 250cc volume teed into that long wastegate line. You can see there was no spiking despite having the equivalent of 10m (~33") of hose between the turbo and wastegate actuator.

Besides, boost spike isn't necessarily a bad thing unless it upsets drivability. If you have enough fuel for (say) 10psi at 7000rpm, then you'll have more than enough fuel for 12psi at 3000rpm. Most factory boost curves peak in the mid-range and drop towards redline anyway.

I'd try it before deciding it's a bad location. It's not like it's hard to relocate to the engine bay it the results aren't satisfactory. :)

If we were talking about pistons engines, I'm sure this would be applicable. :)

I've used an HKS MBC on the FC turbo before, and it sucked ass.
I had it originally in the cockpit, and it spiked with a full exhaust.
I then ran it under the hood with shorter hoses, and this kept the spiking to a minimum.
My A'PEXi Super AVC-R put the MBC to shame. :D

What difference does that make?

88rxn/a 02-26-06 11:44 AM

another good point... the glove box would benifit if i go through the firewallits pretty close to the turbo...well closer than under the dash...i prob. wont be turning the controller anyways...ill have a friend turning for me for saftey...EBC will come later on when i can afford one...there not cheap !! thanks for the input people!!!
ill take your advice NZ and sit i the car and see if i can find a suitable place....

tonybcrazy 02-26-06 12:21 PM

Yeah that makes sense the boost will spike. I think there is a way to plumb it to get it to react the way I thought also. I'm a little fuzzy though its been a few years since I sold my turbo car.

88rxn/a 03-10-06 05:15 PM

ok... i sat in my car for a while and still decided i wanted it in the glove box...so today i mounted it in there and think it turned out really good....when its all installed (lines and all) ill post pictures to show where its at in the box...still room for the junk!!!

AFgreasemnky 03-10-06 05:41 PM

I saw a MBC that was in the engine bay but used what looked like a speed cable (or something similar...) To turn the knob manualy from inside the car. Ill have to search and find a link... looked bad ass though.

adrock3217 03-10-06 09:48 PM

I like those neat GReddy electronic boost controller's..look so easy to use! Same as an MBC..twist the knob left or right...

88rxn/a 03-11-06 04:49 PM

i didnt get a chance to get pic.s today...maybe tommorow but it turned out good...lag is there but not to bad...im gonna shorten the lines more when i get time...

NZConvertible 03-12-06 12:01 AM

That won't fix lag.
