Mazdaspeed LSD Rebuild Kit - Does it work on US Cars
 

Hey guys, I need a new diff for my TII and I'm trying to avoid buying the Kaaz lsd due to it's loudness and I don't want to buy a used diff so I'm looking at rebuilding mine. I found this kit but it says that it might not fit US spec cars, also I'm unclear if it's for the TII diff or the GXL diff.

Has anyone rebuilt their LSD with this kit? Will it fit in my '87 TII. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I beleive they are for TII's, since it says its for "Japanese only cars". And they all had the 8" turbo rear end.

But to my knowledge, the 8" rear end is the same here as in Japan.

I wasn't aware of any difference between them but I want to make sure it will work before I buy it.

I checked the part number, and it doesn't appear to exist in the Mazda Motorsports system. S4's came with the clutch type and S5's came with viscous. The picture shows the clutches so it would have to be for S4 turbos...

Instead of replacing everything, you should replace all the bearings and mic the clutches and spacers and replace only what is out of spec (per the FSM).

well hell .. I just looked on my mazdaspeed account and they have 3 diferent rebuild kits. None wit the same part number above. Also one was $146, the others were $135. If he is charging 300, I would look elsewhere... O.o I am going to snag up one of these kits for sure!

Keep in mind that you get a big discount with mazdamotorsports. For what it costs retail, plus a small markup, that sounds about right.

So has anyone actually used a rebuild kit from mazdaspeed, particularly interested in the one I linked to since I am not a member of mazdaspeed or get any other discounts.

Unless you can get and replace the fancy special fluid in it then no, the viscous isn't "rebuildable". I'm not just talking about the gear oil.

If you compare the prices to the individual ones from Mazdatrix it's a deal, but I'd take it apart and see what actually needs replacing. You can probably just replace the springs and get the thicker thrust washers from Mazdatrix and do it cheaper that way. I know of someone who took apart an NA diff and found very little plate wear, but the springs get soft and the washers might compress over time.

Well the diff in my TII was supposedly rebuilt right befire I bought it but it started whining on the drive home from maryland and hasn't stopped since. I change the fluids and everything but no better.

I have an '87 TII, isn't that clutch type LSD??

I don't know, I'm just gonna crack the pumpkin open and see whats worn out and broken, I'll post pics so we can all see what it looks like. This might actually happen today even.

Ok, well whining is a symptom of a problem with the ring and pinion, not the LSD itself. You should take it out and check it for backlash and tooth contact immediately, or you might end up needing new ring and pinion gears.

Since all Japanese FC's are turbo's, that kit will be for the turbo diff. Like 95% of the car, the diff is the same regardless of where the car was sold. :)

Thanks for the info guys. I haven't been driving the car much at all since I got it so hopefully there's not to much damage, I guess we'll find out.

actually, all FC's were turbo's in japan but not all had LSD. (ie: gt-x trim or gt-r trim, se-limited) there were many trim levels and not all had lsd.

I know that; I have a Japanese FC that didn't have an LSD. But that's not really relevant. A Japanese S4 LSD is the same as a US S4 LSD, which is the point of the thread.

turbo 8" rear or na 7" rear? was the open diff still 8"?

They had the 8" rear end in Japanese vehicles. So the open diff would still be an 8" rear.

Yes, because it was a turbo diff. The centre doesn't dictate how strong the diff needs to be, the engine does.
